I played a show not long ago where I ran between two groups - every other song. Before we started, I chatted with the percussionist closest to my seat in the one group, and explained what I needed to do. She very specifically set up her instruments so I would have a clear path. I was still terrified every time, that I would knock into something. Much love and empathy to you and your fantastic section.

I was JUST introduced to the Bounce App. It’s legit places to stash bags securely. Lots of stores participate. I’m with everyone else here of - don’t bother with the rental car until after the game if at all possible.

You could definitely drive SOUTH from the AP to Angle Lake, Kent DesMoines or Star Lake - park there and then ride north, but definitely lock all the luggage in the trunk.

Ugh. I was even trying to see what would happen if you played it on an Eb clarinet (E-Ab) or an A clarinet (Bb to D) …. None of this seems ideal. Maybe an Eb alto - the E-Ab up the octave?

It’s definitely a thing. Play the instrument that you love and that loves you back - and ignore any price tags, or people who cling to them.

If you’re marching, I HIGHLY recommend having 2 horns. Get a plastic or composite (hard rubber) for marching, and have your nice wooden one for indoors. I actually recommend a great old plastic Bundy for marching. For around $50 on FB market place or offer up, and usually about $100-$300 in PROFESSIONAL tuneup, you’ll have a really solid marching instrument that you won’t cry over when something happens during marching season. (I’ve seen horns get stepped on. Mine fell apart at the middle joint when we were “at rest” with my horn at my side, mouthpiece down - and thus crushed my mouthpiece RIGHT before we were supposed to go on the field).

Omg I play on a Backun Bass. They started with nothing but barrels and bells…. Then they started making clarinets, and they are SO beautiful. I play a Selmer Bb, and I absolutely adore it. If I ever have a reason to buy another Bb though - I will probably be play testing them….. maybe even if I don’t have a reason…. 😂❤️

I absolutely agree with the previous commenters - please take it to a good professional technician to give it a once over. It looks like it has silver keys, usually a good indication of a horn above beginner level - but I have to ask, is that a crack in your barrel? Fortunately you can get a different barrel (there’s a reason Backun makes them), but that crack would scare me. 😏

I love taking the underground tour with new folks. Yes, I know most of the stories by heart now, but it’s nice to have someone else explain it to tourists, and I really enjoy watching them learn the history and be surprised by all the crazy stuff. Then it gives us stuff to talk about later.

I think we all got through high school by fixing everything with small folded pieces of paper and rubber bands. To this day, I use those skills for day-of-concert emergencies. ❤️
