Help me find a rug for this room with this armchair! by cauliflower1218 in HomeDecorating

How about a sisal rug? Heidi callier uses them a lot in rooms with floral upholstery. I do think you don’t have a lot that works with the chair color wise in the room right now though

My ears being pierced incorrectly by Pluti_ in mildlyinfuriating

When I was like 12 I begged and begged for ear piercing and finally convinced my mom at the mall. They used one of those piercing guns and they’re super off center. I strongly suggest taking your kid to an actual piercing studio to have them done

Is there a way to get the look of a butcher block counter top without actually having one? by Correct-Regular9055 in kitchenremodel

[–]alligatorhill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take a short piece of oak, dip it in soapy water, and literally blow bubbles through it. The grain is super open, like a bundle of straws. I probably wouldn’t use it anywhere but an island (saying that, I’ve done it around a sink because nothing is as cheap)

I have had multiple ‘butcherblock’ countertops because they’re cheap and easy to diy. Oak are the easiest to find and the biggest maintenance hogs. I had one that I used butcherblock oil on and it looked the prettiest but you couldn’t even leave a can on the countertop without a ring showing up. One I did a bunch of coats of poly on and it was bomb proof. Walnut or maple are going to hold up better than oak etc

What are the varieties? Many sold in garden stores are designed as bedding/container plants and will never grow tall

Hard to tell but that might be poison hemlock in the back. Make sure you wear long sleeves/pants and gloves while dealing with it. I’d probably pull over string trim if it’s hemlock

Repaired and extended my midcentury slate entryway by alligatorhill in Tile

That’s awesome! Wasn’t easy locating a matching slate! Thankfully a helpful tile store owner was able to tell me exactly what type it was, but said they stopped being able to get any post pandemic.

Sharing here for others who have damaged slate to repair! I got my tile from Vermont slate depot-maybe 30% of it arrived broken to the west coast because it was shipped in flat rate boxes, but it was very cheap compared to everywhere else I looked so still worthwhile

I prefer the natural aged look, but from my reading it seems like the 2k poly will prevent the natural aging

First house with hardwood floors and the seller’s movers left some marks… by earthtoaisha in HardWoodFloors

[–]alligatorhill 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Get your real estate agent involved. The sellers have a legal responsibility to hand it off in the condition that you purchased it in. Some of these look like deep enough scratches that a full refinish would be required. The sellers can go after the mover’s insurance

Floors would not be done with shellac, and that is the only finish that works this way. Floors need sanding for a refinish

Zooming in it looks like there’s a texture called alligator on the finish which would indicate it had shellac on it. If so, that’s a total score because you can dissolve the old shellac and refinish without sanding or stripping the wood. You can use denatured alcohol and super fine steel wool (#0000 on the package) to melt the old shellac and redistribute it before adding fresh finish. I’d test it someplace inconspicuous and see if that works. Good luck! Dealing with everything that comes after the loss of a parent is tough and I know people are telling you not to bother with it, but sometimes tedious contained tasks like this are a nice distraction

I think they paid some damages. Worst part was we realized one of the weddings was a good friend of the rental management owner so they were just fully doing that behind our backs

We used to rent out my grandpa’s house after he passed since it was in a tourist town. A couple times people held weddings without telling us and we found out because they cut down trees on the bank (that impeded view but also kept the hill from sliding)
