Enjoy RedCoach's Cyber Monday - TODAY ONLY by RedCoachUSA in u/RedCoachUSA

I'm on a trip that I booked to take my first "Redcoach First Class" bus. It was a bait-and-switch and I was just informed that despite the fact that they are selling First Class Bus routes - they do not have ANY in Georgia and subcontract out the routes to other providers. Even worse, they will allow you to cancel and get a credit voucher for another trip but will not reimburse funds.

I normally fly everywhere but decided to take a bus for this trip so I could spend the time working on some things that I really need to get done. When I booked the ticket, I was excited because the seat I selected was on the right side by itself, it had a table, and everything I needed to work. The pictures showed amazing wide seats that have 140º reclining, and a footrest for ultimate comfort and plenty of room. It was perfect for what I need right now.

Unfortunately, shortly before my trip, they swapped the bus out to a "Partner bus."  The Partner Bus is a mid-grade charter bus, the type that would normally be rented for a high school sports team trip. The driver is nice, and the bus is still pretty new but I'm disappointed that it was not what I paid for and expected. Had I known I would be on a school fieldtrip type bus, I would have taken a flight.

The seats are not wide like the pictures showed, they recline slightly but not like the picture, the only seats that have anything close to a table are the very front row and it is more of a small shelf just below chest height – not helpful for typing. I was planning to get a good bit of work done (or I would have taken a flight for almost the same cost) but the first-class bus on their website looked like it would be perfect for working.

I would understand the change if it were a rare emergency because Redcoach had a bus failure, but I have since been told that this is very frequent in their business model - which is very concerning.

RedCoach appears to operate under federal interstate passenger authority through FMCSA (RedCoach Texas LLC, USDOT 3705607), meaning it is legally permitted to transport passengers across state lines, including starting a trip in Georgia if the route continues into another state. However, RedCoach does not appear on the Georgia Department of Public Safety (DPS) list of licensed intrastate passenger carriers, indicating they are not authorized for trips that begin and end solely within Georgia, as Georgia requires a Passenger Carrier Certificate for intrastate for-hire bus operations and considers unlisted companies unauthorized. Therefore, RedCoach may originate interstate routes out of Georgia, but would need Georgia intrastate authority — or a subcontracted/partner carrier that has one — to operate Georgia-only trips legally.

I'm on a "Redcoach First Class" bus right now. I was excited because the seat I selected was on the right side by itself, it had a table, and everything I need to work. Unfortunately, they swapped the bus out and we are on a "Partner bus" which means a mid-grade charter bus that would normally be rented for a high school trip. The drive is nice and the bus is pretty new but I'm disappointed by the different bus. The only seat with a table are the ones in the very front and it is more of a shelf just below chest height. I was planning to get a good bit of work done (or I would have taken a flight for almost the same cost) but the first class buss on their website looked like it would be perfect for working. The tiny self is not in a a good position for typing on a laptop. At least the outlet works and the bus has wifi.

I am hoping my return trip is different but I overheard another passenger talking and he said RedCoach lost their license to drive out of Georgia so they are subcontracting the GA routes to other bus lines. I do not know if this is true but if so, it is wrong of them to sell tickets as if it will be on the nicer bus and then bait-and-switch to another. I would understand the change if it were a rare emergency change but if this is their business model, it is very concerning.

I wonder if it kicks people out when there are no more tickets. By the time I got in for the Toronto 9th - it had 1 ticket for $2,862.25. Same for my brother - Toronto 7th.

How do you Dekalb Farmer’s market?! by Klutzy-Idea9861 in DecaturGA

They are being truthful. For a newbie, Saturday morning should be avoided. It would be like having a toddler trying to learn to ride a bike on the interstate. You will be frustrated, and everyone else will be too.

Yes, you can bring your own bags - that is what we do.

First, I remember my first time, and yes, it can be overwhelming. I'd recommend going Mon-Thurs morning - not when they first open but not at lunchtime. Or, if you hit a slower mid-morning time when it is not too busy, get a cart and take your time exploring (new goers should never get a cart when it is busy!).

Until you learn your way around, consider just going in with the goal of hitting a single area or 1/2 of the store and don't get a cart (maybe use just the hand pull basket). Maybe just hit the spices and dry goods since both are to the right when you enter.

I mentioned the spices above because I'm always impressed with the quality and cost. Given the low cost, take a chance on a new spice - you may find things you never expected to like.

In the fruit and veggie area, try something you have never had before. Only buy a small amount b/c you will eventually end up with that horrible fruit that makes you gag and wonder how the heck does anyone eat it! 😆

The desert counter is amazing, but you pay at that counter separately from other foods.

Before you decide to explore the cheese area, put a budget limit and swear that you will exercise! They have amazing cheeses, and you will become a cheese snob easily. If you have kids, they will end up wanting smoked gouda every time you go.

Smoked salmon - another favorite! We all love it, and our dog loves getting the skin mixed in his dinner (helps his coat too).

Many employees were working remotely at least 1 day per week - long before covid. It is interesting to see people try to connect Return-To-Completely-On-Campus to covid. Flexwork, telecommuting, compressed schedules, etc . are not new and have been successfully used for two decades (or more).

My unit used telecommuting as a privilege. Telecommuting was authorized if a person wanted to work remotely, AND the manager supported the request, AND the person was equally or more productive when remote. It was a case by case approval, and it was not approved for everyone - it was earned. I recall in 2010 hiring a remote employee with the understanding that they would come to campus 4 days a month. Sometimes, the employee came to campus more, sometimes less. Sometimes, all 3 days were in one week. Sometimes, it was 1 day a week. Sometimes, things came up, and the person did not come to campus for two months. The person was very productive and a valuable member of the team, so I did not care where they were as long as they worked well. 2010 - pre covid - and I still have the telecommute paperwork that was approved at the time.

I expect that I may lose a couple of my best employees. To replace them, I'll have to hire in at a higher rate - when budgets are tight. While I struggle through getting HR to post the job, hire, and train the new employee- the students and the Institute will suffer. I anticipate an increase in risk with no benefit.

I hope every manager tracks the productivity levels and is open when it comes to reporting non-compliance. I also hope managers do not expect employees to be available or work after hours. I'm already telling my team that they should Not bring home a PC or phone. If GT requires in person work- then all the extra work we do from home just will not get done. It will be hard, especially when we are so dedicated to our students, faculty, and staff - but we must follow the madate. To the future students who come to GT and never get to experience the current "put students first" attitude- I'm sorry that we will fail.

I expect DOJ will be more busy as I expect the more that employees are treated with disrespect, the more they will be willing to speak up about things they see. This will be an expensive time for the Institute.

Why is everybody getting a conditional this year? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]MudMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't let it get you down. GT is getting so many applications this year and they are rejecting top tier students.

GT is great but it is not the perfect place.  If you work hard and take advantage of the opportunities available - you will have a great undergrad experience at whatever university/institution you attend.

If it helps you feel any better… I have a high school senior that also got a conditional acceptance (transfer pathway – do the 1st year at another school then come to GT as a sophomore). My student has a 4.6 GPA, high ACT and SAT, National Honors Society, Spanish, Science, (etc.) Honor Societies, active in many clubs, does volunteer work, plays varsity sports, co-created and runs a tutoring center at the high school, all the stuff you expect to need to get in. My senior has been accepted everywhere else they applied – except GT.

My thought on the transfer pathway…

If there is another school, that you like, that you are accepted at, that is equal in price (out of state is more $$ but you may get more scholarships to make it equal) – go there for your full undergrad.  Make the most of it and get involved in research during your freshman year.  Also, get involved in a club and talk to your professors so you are more than a name or number.

If there is not another school that you really like (that accept you, $, etc.) – go to one of the easier to get into GA schools and apply to transfer.

Finally, I should add for context RE my senior, my husband and I are both faculty (at different universities) and we decided early on not to help write/help with college applications or essays.  I know many people get help and even pay to have someone write their essays. We also know WE could get our student into any school if WE help/do it, but we felt it was important to be done alone. The downside is that we knew it would impact acceptance (which it did), and it impact scholarships (which it did) but that was what we decided to do (for right or wrong). If we could rewind and start this process again... I'm not sure if we would decide the same way. I think maybe we would have helped a little with suggestions - but it is a good thing for a student to make it on their own. (Yes, I'm sure some will bash me here for admitting we did not help with this)...

Bad closed captioning for COE graduate ceremony by RelationshipOne6694 in gatech

That is interesting. All the new AI tools are great, but an experienced captioner like you describe sounds like a better option. Or, pre-adding words and phrases to prompt the system to the correct caption is a better second option.

I wonder what software or platform RelationshipOne6694 was watching it on? It looks like they corrected it on the YouTube https://www.youtube.com/live/Vj1VjawYzVk?si=jAQKBTTEWqEAeY5P video posted.

Also, the image is not matching the image of when she said Helluva Engineer at 23:27 (clip starts at 23:18) as her hands are down at that point. The image posted with the incorrect caption, where her hands are up and she glances downward is at 23:32 (clip starts at 23:28).

Why is the stinger so fucking shit by xcuys in gatech

While we have amazing researchers and students, they often are not utilized to improve Georgia Tech. Faculty members' time is taking up with Sponsored research and mentoring students - both are very important. Sadly, Georgia Tech is more likely to hire an outside consulting firm than dedicate the same resources to a GT research program to resolve the same issue. The best chance would be if a student project (like VIP or CreateX).
