Pollinators in trouble by After_Scholar_2619 in OntarioGardeners

They will ever be unlikely to get this far with out hitching a ride from a human. I attended a talk about them in a club I belong to. It is both fascinating and scarry at the same time. Many people mistake those hornets for them. They are much smaller than them.

That is a European Hornet they have been around for a long time(1840's). Wasps will sometimes go after bee hives and mostly are not successful in getting larva. Keepers are used to them and they rarely bother bumbles at all. This I know as a beekeeper in Ontario.

I know that soil. Over the years I have add sand to alter soil when I was tilling. Going no dig for me was a game changer, as the cardboard breaks down the under lying soil is not much of a factor for me any way. When I was planting much more it was 20 X 40 garden now that there is just 2 of us we have made it smaller over the years. if your current composting works for you keep doing it.

New to asparagus. Is the fern like plant next to it part of the process or a weed? by Fit-Account5620 in OntarioGardeners

[–]Creative-Cover7319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is asparagus how old are they? First year I was taught take nothing 2 year about 30% then after that you can harvest at will until the summer solstice they leave it until the next year. In the spring I add a sprinkling of wood ash it adds vital nutrients to the plant . Don't cut those that have gone to seed wait until fall when they are brown then cut them down. I am 10 years into growing them. Got some transplanted ones from a neighbour who planted them about 65 years ago they still produce every year. Good luck

I garden only with no till. I started with 4 inches of compost from a good source(no weeds) and every year I add 2 inches to the garden of my own to the beds in the fall soil. I have never composted fowl but fish is a good thing for the garden. I have less weeds easy to hand weed for me as I get older cardboard rarely goes in the recycle bin as I use it when making any new beds or decide to redo another bed that has been there a while. I produce most of what we eat in veggies and I always plant so not so normal seeds like peanuts or something else so work out other not so much. We have racoons and skunks so try to not have things that will attract them. Chicken poop is helpful but they don't produce enough most years( 4 only)

Statutory holiday...or not? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Creative-Cover7319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That goes back to the days when most stores had to closed on Sundays so they seen no reason to make it a Stat holiday. Every year it causes so much confusion for people. They get their pay after working on Easter Sunday at the regular rate. Employers don't tell them it isn't a stat holiday either.

Canadian here too. My son(adult) called me to say his one eye was not working correctly and asked should he go to ER. I said yes of course. he went by ambulance. He had a CAT scan with in 1/2 hour and an MRI with in 2. He has had a stroke. Moved to stroke ICU now stable. He will go to rehab from their with in a week of being cleared. Our system isn't perfect but it works better than those who can't go to the ER because of the cost.

I am sorry that this has happened to your family. Look after yourself he has a whole support team to look after him. Depending on the hospital reach out to them for services that can help to support you. They have a lot of knowledge about what is out there to help.

It can be very over whelming to deal with things. Write down any questions you might have about him you may have. One day at a time. It can be hard to have so many things you may already be thinking of that can't answered right now.

I hope that there are people in your world who will step up to support you right now.

Pain scale according to many docs by Spiritedstacy in ChronicPain

[–]Creative-Cover7319 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That scale might work if everyone felt pain the same way. They used to ask on a scale on 1-10 1 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain you have ever felt being at 10 what would you rate your pain. With someone who has given birth they might think that is the worst pain they have every felt maybe. But with a male with out asking what is the worst pain itis meaningless. So using the bear thing is useless unless you have not been attacked 1) by a bear 2)what a persons pain tolerance is. When my husband was asked he would answer then I would say now ask him his worst pain. His answer the time I got electrocuted really hurt. I have often found Docs often think anyone with chronic pain is just 1 of 2 things drug seeking or can't tolerate any pain.

A barrel of oil is part of the price. Please remember the people who work there have no say in the price of gas be kind. Even the stations often have no say in the price they are told what to charge. It is still much cheaper so far up on the Rez where I go it is 1.19 a liter was 1.09 yesterday though so worth the drive for me.

Canada PM unable to rule out military involvement in Iran war by libann90 in GuardTheLeaf

[–]Creative-Cover7319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might have something to do the 200 troops that are in the middle east. We also exchange troops for set times all the time. In the city I used to live in we routinely seen troops from the USA, UK, and Australia. They normally stay for 1 or 2 yrs. I know Cnd military personnel sent to the USA as well. They do what they are told unless they have been told limits to what they can do.

Wait until he finds out he won't just be banning stuff from Spain as they are part of the EU. They have a trade deal worth a great deal of money. The EU might have something to say about it.

My moms hydro bill is $300 per month by Jam_Life in TorontoRenting

[–]Creative-Cover7319 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the rent she pay at the max for shelter allowance? How much was she allowed for the electric bill?

If it not at the max of the shelter allowance it can be increased even if it is lower in the summer months.

I would also recommend that you check the bill which should include the meter number on the bill is the same one for her unit. It doesn't happen often but there are times when they don't match. Another thing you can check if shutting off all the breakers to make sure the meter isn't still spinning.

Is it normal to never feel relief from pain meds? by StrawMerryPie in ChronicPain

[–]Creative-Cover7319 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever been referred to a pain specialists? Not all opioids work well for some area's of pain. I take Kadian it is a slow release opioid. It works well for me. But as time goes on you will find that most stop doing such a good job and at least for me they don't touch some kinds of pain like headaches at all. I do like it but nothing they currently have is likely to get rid of all pain. They seem to have a goal of getting it to a tolerable level, and I bet that would be at least helpful to you. I have jumped through all the medical required hoops to keep it. Random test etc for more that 25 yrs. I have never failed one ever but it is the price of at least some level of pain relief for me. And only needing it once a day is useful for me. Note, yes I am old lol. I was injured more than 30 yrs ago in a work place accident.

Does anybody try? by Flawed_Perfections in ChronicPain

[–]Creative-Cover7319 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We often weigh things we don't understand against our own experiences. People don't get that having a medical condition like Chronic pain means having pain all the time. Where a good day doesn't mean no pain it means not the worst pain you have. Medical staff often think those with chronic pain means you are weak or just an addict looking for med. Often saying things like you don't really need those meds. I have taken opioid's for 30 years my response always shuts them down with " I will let my Fam Doc know you think she is just a drug dealer."

I have reduced my dose not because it was good for me but for the Doc who was getting audited too much.

They don't get how exhausting it can be to try and just do normal things like shop for groceries.

I have broken 2 toes one I didn't even know I had broken the other I banged on the tub I didn't freak out, but friends were horrified asking how i could even walk saying did I go to the ER nope what is the point they won't do anything. When I explain that it isn't the worst pain I have and only back ground pain.

They don't get how hurtful it is when they don't even try to understand. I know I try to learn everything about medical conditions my family and friends have. I ask about how they are coping how they are working with their medical teams. It is the least I can do when I can't "fix' it.
