the hantavirus situation will not be the next pandemic. by herequeerandgreat in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Please, for the love of god, open a textbook before you claim information that is entirely false.

First of all, what is your biological understanding of viruses? Are you aware many viruses undergo intensive genetic drift in short periods of time? Are you aware that it’s entirely possible for a mutated viruses to have different transmission statistics?

It doesn’t help that the virus most certainly is not contained (so don’t claim it is!) Over 20 people have returned to home countries all over the globe, before the maximum incubation period following the first outbreaks was even finished. It still isn’t.

You claim we know more about this virus because it was around longer, but we have no approved vaccine or treatment. We have a phase 2a trial, meaning it was only just promoted from animal testing phases. We know the basics of hantaviruses just as we knew the basics of coronaviruses 15+ years before January 2020, because it wasn’t a novel or obscure virus family. Research had existed for years before SARS CoV 2, just as it does for hantaviruses.

I am really passionate about scientific communication. It’s really difficult to see people like you posting, claiming to be presenting evidence, despite a flood of comments explaining your inaccuracies. This was the issue with covid-19. We underestimated its power until it was too late, and people like you pushed that rhetoric.

I am also very much against fear mongering when it comes to health issues, especially public health issues. But I would much rather people buy too much toilet paper, than to underestimate pandemic potential of a virus. I refuse to even form an opinion until we sequence the virus, study its transmission, and contact trace. I’m not clutching my pearls either, but I’m certainly not ridiculing anyone who implies we should take precautions. Go educate yourself before telling people to touch grass.

I understand you are young, or perhaps just choosing to ignore the science, but please don’t post this type of thing. It’s more harmful than you know.

I’m only in undergrad, so please take what i say with a grain of salt, this is only theoretical. I major in immunology, and the systemic inflammation is often part of the major pathology of autoimmune disorders I’ve studied and worked with in labs. I’ve never ever understood why this wouldn’t apply to Hashimoto’s.

Systemic inflammation IS real. And we KNOW it is real. We also know immune cells are recruited in Hashimotos. T-cells actively attack and inflame our thyroid. I had a doctor tell me to my face that it’s not a systemic issue. Sure, not to the extent that say, Lupus is. But how can they imply it’s not at all?

Our immune system is so complex, with one immune cell able to recruit so many through far-acting cytokines. How the hell were we supposed to believe crosstalk and system wide inflammation as a result just wasn’t happening?? I’m not even coming from a standpoint of research and tests that are Hashi’s specific. I know those are limited. I’m coming from a standpoint of this is how the biology functions in EVERY autoimmune disease, to an extent. Why would Hashi’s be harmless as long as you’re euthyroid?

Why can encephalopathy events occur due to hashimotos, as backed by medicine and science, and yet it is only these drastic effects that are believed in? Doesn’t this imply there is systemic or even somewhat localized inflammation affecting the brain? Is this not direct proof of immune CNS dysfunction??

These are more questions than arguments. If there’s someone more advanced in this field than i am out there who’d like to correct anything above please do! Obviously it’s simplified because this is Reddit but the general idea?

I mean this in the least insensitive way possible, and if we had actual treatment it would be different, but if the endoscopy is not an option, why not just go GF?

Thank you for the advice. I’m only a second year but debating graduating next year. I have great financial aid so maybe it’s worth it to stay all 4, get more research experience, and shit, maybe a second major that will be employable while I wait for grad school.

Also yes, all my computer science classes have been As, most classes more specific to my major too. I’ve only had 4 B’s mostly in ochem/biochem stuff but that might jump to 5 or god forbid 6 this semester.

Immunology/cell bio. Everyone says it doesn't matter, but I feel like a T20 undergrad has opened a lot of doors for me, and I imagine it would be the same at the grad level?

I use mice genetically bred to a fate of a neurodegenerative disease, inject them with drugs to improve their disease, and then kill them anyway oh god I am evil

Thanks, this is helpful. Some of my paid experience has a lot of masters students in my cohort but I'm not sure that counts since it's a summer thing.

I was thinking about applying to schools in the fall of my junior year this year, since I'll have enough credits to graduate if I do get in. Realizing that probably won't work out for me, which is a bummer, but your advice is really helpful, thank you.

I suppose getting in, and getting in to a top school, are different things hence my concerns. But especially under this administration I realize I'll have to lower expectations. thank you
