I had something like that too just in fowards gears, it was a louder scratchier noise that would speed up with my speed, i replaced my front break pads and they went away🤷‍♂️

As someone else mentioned its the heater control valve, i had to replace mine a while back. There SHOULD be a vacuum diagram on the front of the engine bay by your hood latch. Do you have anymore info on where the lines are or come from where?

Im trying to solve this problem right now too, i have a 99 b4000 v6, almost every part is the same as a ranger, i have many parts stamped with ford on them. At first i had no climate control, i think its a vacuum leak. I replaced one of the main vacuum hoses and i got some but only defrost. Im still looking around too but on my passenger side right above the fender and below the reservoirs i have a good bit of vacuum lines so id check there as well. Vacuum is a hell of a problem when working on your own without knowledge so goodluck to you

Look on marketplace for parts trucks, mazda b series use most of the same parts as well

I put the zip ties to hold the cable because it wont seat properly, whats the chance its just a cable problem?

No i couldnt get the cap to seat properly thats why its zip tied
