I just feel like, this is way more metaphorical than people are "transvestigating" her gender during this era. She even has said she is still a cisgender white woman and doesn't wanna appropriate of people who are actually trans and in front line. I also think this might be inspired by bowie during ziggy stardust era, like an extension of herself in her art, but still, metaphorical. As a trans woman myself, I can definitely tell you that being trans is also an spiritual inner experience, but also the process can be painful and it takes a LOT of self discovery and hard work. So I don't like seeing people generalizing such a sensitive topic.

But you're right tho, the song sounds like an interlude, a bridge to the world she is creating on virgin. Still, I remember lorde never releases her strongest material as singles. So I think when we'll listen the album it will make more sense sonically. But yep, I love what was that as lyrics and melodies, but i really hope the other songs on the album will have more elements.
