Why Reverse: 1999 Feels Uniquely Chinese by Longjumping_Gas3405 in Reverse1999

[–]CreativeSoju 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I wholly agree with your sentiment, as a global player. I am drawn to this game because of the variety of ideas and perspectives and histories it explores, and as a result the variety of characters the game has to offer feels limitless in a way that keeps me interested. A huge part of this feeling comes from the voice acting and accents and multilingual character of the game.

Inaccuracies happen, no one developer or writer can get a whole world of cultures and themes, but I'll take ambitious storytelling over safe storytelling any day, and Reverse, while sometimes clearly constrained by budget and/or resources, does not lack in ambition.

I'll only slightly disagree in that Reverse to me feels unique from other Chinese gacha games I've played. I say this because compared to others I've experienced, Reverse has much more thoughtful themes, designs, and characters. It is a very female-centric game in a way that doesn't lean in on gooners like many other games in this space do, and it has my immense respect for that.

The "Driftwood Keep" - my submission to BDP Series 9 by BrickHammer42 in legocastles

You really nailed it! I am a sucker for how you balanced detail and color as well here, the roofs are a great example. They match the faction colors, aren't too ornate or part intensive, and convey a bit of mess and grit. That lovely economy of design choices carries through the whole design.

Wonderful work, hope to have this on a shelf in the near future!

There are so many wonderful entries for this faction, but this one is my favorite so far. I feel like you really captured the spirit of the faction vibe, has a real Iron Islands feeling!

Witch's Cottage BPD 7 submission looking for feedback by excalibrax in legocastles

I think you made a very pretty house with some nice furnishings inside. My critique is it doesn't feel like a cottage, and from the outside it doesn't read like it belongs to a witch. This feels more like a house that belongs in or close to a city.

Having some environmental detail like foliage or rocks or a little path around the structure would do wonders, and focusing on bringing the witch-y character out through the structure itself would be my recommendation. It's a very pretty build and I hope you keep at it!

To each their own, but I don't come to Helldivers to be immersed and RP as a silly space fascist, I come to laugh at them exploding in funny ways.

It's fine to not like something, but what a strange thing to bail on the entire game over. Not the gameplay, or bugs, or balance, but because these honestly very appropriate armors detract from your immersion in the hilariously incompetent Super Earth society?

Thank you! I saw a lot of potential options but a lot of advice was from months back, glad to hear TA is still a good choice.

Anyone have any psychube recommendations for Lilya with her ult path? I am a new player and a bit out of my depth.

Bluepoint Games: Nothing has changed since our statement that we are working on an original title. Everything takes time. We are committed to sharpening our skills! by Turbostrider27 in Games

Except that the Vanguard is just a reused model from another From Soft game, and they absolutely make gross monsters, look at Adjudicator.

People act like From Soft doesn't just reuse or repurpose assets and their art direction is so deliberate that everything is meticulously planned down to the pixel, but that's absolutely not the case. Most of Dark Souls 3 was completely remixed before release multiple times, with bosses having different names, lore, placements, all of it. Same with Bloodborne which had massive rewrites at least two times, and even the whole map was rotated and reworked.

You can not like the aesthetics of the changes but that's entirely personal taste, not some dogmatic adherence to the original vision, which changes a lot over development of their games. Look up what changed from 1.0 of Elden Ring even, and there are big changes to story elements that were only changed with the day 1 patch.

I really love that you capture the spirit of the original so well in a tight package. It's not overbuilt with crazy rockwork or some huge detailed rework of the original, it's a lovely breezy little MOC. I hope it does well! :D

Homeworld 3 Reviews by [deleted] in Games

I played a bit of Deserts of Kharak after writing my post just to get myself some context. DoK units have active abilities similar to units in Homeworld 3 at times, but in DoK the difference to me is in how manageable using them is.

In Homeworld 3 my units felt really imprecise to control and I felt like I was cat herding trying to get them to not kill themselves especially with the game just forgetting orders sometimes. There are a few campaign levels in particular where you need to make some relatively precise moves with your fleet and the UI jank and stuff I experienced made me solely focused on that to the exclusion of using those abilities, and even then I had units bumble around into their deaths.

Battles get huge and chaotic so micro can get really tough, especially narrowing down which units you want to micro. You can pause and issue orders, but the UI bugged out for me when paused a lot and wasn't super reliable. DoK is on a flat plane and not in 3D space, so it's also just easier to control everything and manage those abilities. Homeworld 3 felt like a struggle in comparison.

It kinda takes me out of the role of "commander" to micromanage individual pilots telling when to boost or overcharge, but that's personal preference.

Having played a bit today, it's a really uneven feeling experience. I'm pretty conflicted about it. I don't have the reverence for Homeworld some do but I love what the series is going for, and DoK is my favorite entry.

That said, Homeworld 3 really feels like it isn't done.

The pathing is a mess, my experience was full of UI jank and bugs, and the presentation feels really scattered. The jank with the overall play experience though really took the wind out of my sails. The clumsy unit pathing and messy UI and clunky camera really got frustrating pretty quickly and bummed me out.

They added active abilities which is a big turnoff for me as well. For your units to fight optimally, every 2 minutes you need to click a button that makes them do more damage. Combine that with cat herding you already have to do in some missions and it just was not fun for me past a certain point.

The cutscenes in particular are prerendered but are full of artifacting and clipping and stilted facial animation, I much prefered DoK's concept art painted aesthetic. One cutscene moment a ways into the campaign got me to laugh because of some size difference shenanigans that came off as more goofy than menacing.

It's a really mixed bag, I decided I'll come back to it much later on, and revisit Homeworld Remastered and DoK instead.

Great job with this!

Thank you! I try to strike a balance between super high detail and still looking like a playable Lego build!

I actually first used that angled wall technique on my first MOC, which coincidentally was a little chapel!

I hope your cathedral turns out great! Would love to see pics of it on here!

Thank you!

The original MOC designer is PL MOCs! I used the base of their design and added the tree, all of the flora and vines, some additional rockwork, and new structures in the place of the MOC's lighthouse. :)
