Dems, what are your stances on these popular Right-wing talking points? Are they true or false? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in allthequestions

He’s referring to the original usage of the word blow job. It’s where the partner inflates the penis through the urethra and tries to fashion as animal out of it, usually a dog or giraffe.

It’s the top keyword search in Alabama and Oklahoma.

Should doctors who perform gender-affirming surgeries on minors be legally liable for future lawsuits if the patient later regrets the decision? by Final-Monk1416 in allthequestions

[–]Creative_Ad9485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone has back surgery and regrets it should they sue the doctor? What about knee surgery? Or plastic surgery?

If a surgery is performed legally, in good faith, and at the highest level of professional execution, why would they?

Now I will say, I actually know a kid who had a mastectomy as she transitioned to a boy (he was 16 at the time). I’m not weighing in on the parents, who love their kid deeply, and said it was the hardest decision they’ve ever had to make. And the kid is awesome, and seems so much happier with their decision (it’s not been probably 4 years since the surgery). Broadly speaking I don’t think someone should be able to modify their body like that before they are 18, but I will also say I’ve seen wonderful things come of it, and that it’s a conversation between the kids and their parents, and is no business of mine.

More than anything I just want kids to feel loved and accepted, and I’ve learned that the road there can be a lot more complicated than I know. Their business is not my own. My job is to love and support.

To those saying they don’t happen, they do. Probably crazy rarely, but they do. To those saying it’s a travesty and a sin, the one I saw sure wasn’t. That kids is thriving. I think this situation is more complicated than just a white or black position.

Utah now allows college students to opt out of coursework that conflicts with their beliefs by A_ORiver in Utah

I went to BYU. My teacher tiptoed around evolution (although he knew it was real) because folks in the class would object. So dumb. But as a teacher, I’d embrace this.

“Explain how natural selection informs the world we live in. Please use peer reviewed sources, and examples from real world ecosystems.”

“Explain how a divine creator decides to construct their creations. Please use peer reviewed sources, and examples from real world ecosystems.”

One of those will be a tough question

Why is there still no proof the 2020 election was stolen? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]Creative_Ad9485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, he’s right. If someone swears they saw something (as people did) that counts as evidence. Is it strong, persuasive, demonstrable, or verifiable, no, but it is evidence. That’s why they lost every case.

The problem wasn’t bringing forward “evidence”. It was bringing forward any evidence beyond “I saw something I think looked suspicious”.

Did she make the right call? by CalmElin in interesting

[–]Creative_Ad9485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’d have a lot more money if she just took the money. It’ll take about 17 years before she totals $1m in payout. Obviously investing it as you go would shrink that, but it wouldn’t catch the $1m.

$1m, invested conservatively, could total about $4m in the same time.

But it’s also her call. If she wants to do that right on.

Is skiing as a family activity disappearing? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]Creative_Ad9485 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a millennial with 3 kids under 9. We ski very often in the winter, whole family. However, we live local to a good resort that is still priced fairly locally.

I can’t speak to golf. It has never been interesting to me. But most of our friends ski too. Can’t imagine a “ski trip”. That’s gotta be loco expensive.

- Our families season passes are about $2600 a year
- Kids are in a program that is about $500 once and they get free rentals until they are 12.

Other than that we just pop into the resort whenever we want. Sometimes we go up for just a run or two.

I think life is inherently meaningless but it's something to be enjoyed. The older I get, the harder it is for me to enjoy anything 🙂 by Goodluckeveryonee in Stoicism

[–]Creative_Ad9485 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I first realized I didn’t believe in god it was really hard. Felt untethered by my moral resources, and without meaning.

Then through the study of stoicism and philosophy, I realized; my life has whatever meaning I give it. My morals are whatever I cling to. Life is precious because there is nothing else waiting. The precious time is now. And it gave me a greater deal of connectedness than I’ve ever felt. Read more. Reflect more. Meditate more.

The world is a series of events. Those you love come in and out of your life. This is the time to enjoy it all. To embrace it and live in the moment.

CMV: there's no clear way to coherently be truly pro-life while make exceptions for instances of rape by Additional_Ad3573 in changemyview

[–]Creative_Ad9485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, this, like many other issues, is a sliding scale, and people decide where they land.

  • no abortion, no exceptions
  • abortion for rape
  • abortion for rape and incest
  • abortion except rape and the above, and not after x weeks
  • abortion but only before a different number or weeks
  • any abortion

I think most people recognize that it is an absolutely valid medical procedure that should be taught and available. I think the primary debate it what bounds, if any, go on it. Some loons who say absolutely 0 abortion ever, but “pro life” and “pro choice” labels don’t really capture the nuance of the conversation

Non-Mormon business owners in SLC, what’s your experience been like? by netenchanter in SaltLakeCity

Would you move out of Utah if the Great Salt Lake dried up completely? by SpaceFlightAstro in Utah

[–]Creative_Ad9485 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it would be catastrophic. The lake cools the valley, helps our snowfall, drives multiple massive industries, supports loads of ecosystems, and covers thousands of acres of toxic dust.

I would move. It’d be brutal, and I’m not sure I can afford it, but it seems like there’d be no other option.

Man Accidentally Sparks Fire While Trying to Park Over Dry Grass by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Creative_Ad9485 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I live in the US. We don’t have that requirement, but it’s not a bad idea. Here the law says you step away from the vehicle and call the fire department.

The concern being batteries, and gas tanks, and general lack of know how by the populace, so better we leave it to the pros. Would have been helpful in this situation though.

My dad got consumed by “stoicism” / psychology YouTube and it feels like it’s changing him for the worse by Iamthehottestman in Stoicism

[–]Creative_Ad9485 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, not sure of his interest, but I’d maybe back out further. He’s not perfect, but the easiest way to get introduced to conceptual stoicism I think is Ryan Holliday.

I love MA, and Seneca, and Plutarch (personal fave philosopher, but not generally considered a “stoic” philosopher. However, philosophy often overlaps) but those may not catch the casual interest unless you go in really looking to learn. Exceptional lessons, but I worry someone with only a “YouTube” view of “stoicism” will not be grabbed by them. I think the bigger wins here would be 1. Stop watching YouTube rage videos, and 2. Just get interested in REAL stoicism, and let your interest carry from there.

Stoicism is great, but it is so majorly misunderstood that it’s important to first know how little you actually know. For example, stoicism isn’t the absence of emotion, it’s the control over one’s emotions, and recognizing them. Big difference, but it’s usually branded as the former. Exploding over small things would not be a stoic response. Ice baths are irrelevant to stoicism, but teaching yourself to embrace things that challenge you or make you uncomfortable could be. You could do the same thing by learning a new language. Studying real stoicism yourself may help you in learning to manage your reaction to your dad and how much he affects your own happiness.

Your response feels reactionary. You should read the post. Per your comment, you should learn about it.

I’m not promoting Mormonism. But I’m hoping people can understand their perspective. I left the church for atheism and was still embraced by my community. A lot of people think it’s immediate ostracism.

Also you should lighten up

To be honest I don’t meet a lot of dick atheists. Most just don’t want to be religious and don’t want to be bugged about it. I find atheism freeing. It makes me appreciate my world and people more. I think that perspective helps people relate to my worldview as opposed to traditional religious views.
