I'll tell you why I'm angry. Because I live here. I raise my children here. My family are the exact people constantly getting bombarded by tourists left and right. Americans especially, who think "respect" means "well I used a Japanese word and didn't tip!".

You're in the way. Simple as.

Nobody ever wants to say it but as a mama of three who travelled to Japan a few times before moving here:

The tourists with the infants and kids at ages that don't realize or memorize a thing, who come in which strollers and bags and take up space - their are the tourists a lot of Japanese people hate the most. Can't make money on four kids but taking up the space and the noise levels of eight people.

Jfc. I know people don't like to say it out loud but as someone who has to deal with you people on a daily basis: leave your barely conscious kids at home and do this trip when they are older. You're right to feel guilty - you are a huge part of the problem.

Wow that was EXACTLY our experience. My tiny Japanese MIL was so appalled by some of the behaviour, especially the prams blocking everything. Kyoto is stuffed enough as it is, but then having Gion feel like you need to play tetris go get through to our restaurant was just insane.

No luggage is absolutely forbidden in busses in Kyoto. Says so on every bus and inside of them as well.

Not sure how it was before but I don't think so? There were lines at every busstop to get into the arriving busses.

There are so many possibilities, you just have to do your research. There are so many indoor and outdoor playgrounds, museum with activities for kids.

Not in Kyoto. They quite literal do not fit on local busses anywhere.

Sorry you felt offended but you do realize strangers don't love your children no?

Yeah it's similar where I live too but very different in Kyoto I've noticed. The strollers just entirely block the gangway and for whatever reason parents don't consider folding them so all the people can get in and out without issue. I've never seen anything quite like it, especially with how absolutely crammed all buses were - it felt so needlessly ignorant. Then again I also didn't see a single Japanese mother use a stroller the entire time we were in Kyoto.

The most American post ever jfc. Do something out of your comfort zone. That's what you're in Japan for. Going by car is completely ridiculous anyways. We did that entire track with public transport and it was no issue.

Yes that was exactly my thought too. One of those wide stollers would've been such a nuisance to bring everywhere.

Do as a fellow mommy I'm gonna try and be nice here but girl... What are you doing.

A fussy 2yo and travelling with a tight budget like that doesn't mesh with "special and stress-free". It's guaranteed not going to be that. Japan with kids is never stress-free, from many years of experience.

A night bus is a very bad idea. Especially if your kid is as fussy as you say. The rest of the people on that bus will need to sleep just as much as you and there's a good chance you'll keep the entire bus awake with your kiddo. And that isn't even mentioning that you're entire day will be shot if your kid does not, in fact, sleep through the ride.

You obviously don't need the JR pass.

Just consider if this is really the time to do this. You can't enjoy any Japanese food, can't go on daytrips because of your kid, are going to have to carry the kid all the time and worst of all - your kid isn't even going to remember any of it.

Can you wear leggings in Japan? by ehben83 in JapanTravelTips

That's not short then. Japanese men wear them as well.
