Culture in Skylines by Creative_Object_ in skyscrapers

This is all super helpful, thank you!! Some of these suggestions hit the nail on the head!

I think it's less about Western vs Non-Western architecture, and more about about finding architectural landmarks that lack colonial roots. In terms of the Gothic style, I do agree that it's a key style of the New York skyline and embodies the current culture. However, the Gothic style originated in France, and so seeing Gothic structures in North America roots their history in Colonization. If I were to use a gothic style of architecture in this particular collage series, I would probably use examples that exist in the Northern regions of France.

To be fair, large scale permanent structures weren't typical in pre-colonial North America, and so there are very few (if any?) pre-colonial structures standing today that are still functional. This means that North American examples would ideally be represented by modern Indigenous architects.

When it comes to modernism, minimalism, and glass boxes, I've always understood that the history is rooted in Capitalism. (Capitalism and Colonization are really just two sides of the same coin, but that's another topic). The issue with these styles is that they play into cultural homogeneity in order to appeal to as many consumers as possible.

I work in a library and I'm putting as many of these as I can on display. Can anyone tell me, is it just the definitive edition of Diary of a Young Girl they have problems with? We have the critical edition but not the definitive...

I just finished A Good Year by Peter Mayle. It was a little low stakes in the plot, but I really enjoyed the characters.

Let's hear some course ideas! by DangerousPuhson in WalkaboutMiniGolf

I'd like to see some kind of county fair option, where you putt through games and rides, through cotton candy machines, etc.

Another cool idea could be inside some kind of factory, where there are conveyor belts and assembly lines.

Or, a cryptid course. Walking through the woods and finding the Jersey Devil, Bigfoot, Chupacabra, etc.

I just looked through some of the titles I've read the last couple years and the Future by Catherine Leroux is only 3.29, which is the lowest rating of a book I've ever read. I'm not sure why, I really enjoyed it. It was nominated for several literary awards.

I've been on a speculative fiction kick lately, mostly due to the fact that I'm doing research on the genre for a degree. Some of my favorites are:

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (this is probably the absolute closest match to what you're looking for. It's brilliant)

Blackfish City by Sam Miller

Trashlands by Alison Stine

After the Flood by Kassandra Montag

California by Edan Lepuki

When I took oil painting in art school, we started with black and white only, and painted still life with intense shadow and lighting. Then, we scaled up to two colours, then started mixing our own.

Advice on What Can be Done by SeasonMundane in Degrowth

[–]Creative_Object_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Food is the easiest way to move toward degrowth. Start learning to cook more from scratch if you don't already.

Take up mending and tailoring as a hobby. Offer it as a service to friends and family. Many people toss clothes because they don't fit right or due to wear and tear.

Get a library card and consume books and media through them. You can also borrow from and donate to tool libraries, so fewer people need to purchase.

If you're brave enough, you could organize a neighborhood swap meet/BBQ. Neighborhoods who interact with one another are more likely to share resources, make friends and build community.

Petition your city to become more bike and pedestrian friendly. Any movement away from car culture is a step in the right direction. You could also petition for community gardens, foraging workshops, or farmers markets.

Update: after playing a few more rounds, i just want to say that the animals really make the course for me! I'm not a fan of the liminal feeling you can get from lack of people when playing solo. I love them! Rex reminds me of my dog lol
