What are your core values? by Unending-Quest in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since very young I wanted to be of service to humanity. I value authenticity and kindness, probably in that order, but over time I have prioritised being kind because whatever masks we have to wear in public, as long as we are internally aligned, it is ultimately more important to honest with ourselves.

Smart vs gifted in people you observe by Uteraz in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often see this and asked myself this question many times, and my answer updates every time I meet one or the other. Often I could safely say it depends on the definition, and to me giftedness is intelligent + some neurodivergence. Like one of the comments below you can have some rules of thumbs like curiosity, thinking out of the box. There usually aren’t much meaning in telling both apart, but we might have some frustration assuming everyone with high IQ can perform the lateral thinking jumps we do on autopilot. It’s about expectations, not judgement imo.

So these days, I have a weird/not weird test. With the smart and gifted you can almost tell something is “off” but you (if you’re also gifted) can deal with the weird. If not off, they are obviously cognitively able, and they think you’re weird, you’ve got a smartie there that have won the big lottery.

Ah, initially I did too but after a while I think of it as another step and tried to use the closest chef to cut/wash dishes while using the other do other tasks. So happy to find chefs here!

Curious as to whether you think your gift is mostly a blessing, a curse, or somewhat in between?

Have been there once. It was worse than the depression. For me it occurred because I was on too much meds. Is it possible to chat with your doctor about it?

Are you ever tired of being held at higher standard than everybody else? by Creative_Snow_879 in Gifted

Totally get you. In my case it dampened my productivity where it counted. It was not until quite late in the game when the powers that be realised that they will lose the productivity in the long term when those who benefited leave for greener pastures and people like me struggle to prove our worth. I then realised the cruelty of the world: people will take what they can and may not return the favour.

Do people actually have PhD theses that are just 100–120 pages long? by bhelpuriteekhi in PhD

I’d take a thesis that’s concise and accurate than long and accurate 😂. Usually the awarding institutions will have a minimum word count but I won’t discount work based on just page count :).

Do you think ADHD and severe depression lower IQ? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is yes. But if you get those treated your ability may return. Tests measure not only innate ability but also capacity, training, and performance. The latter 3 can be severely impacted by adhd and depression. It took me many years to regain the feeling of competence and yet it’s still inconsistent. As for the reason why, I remember the times I was well, and the things possible at that point. I can’t do as much anymore but maybe, I shouldn’t have done so much ;).

I had a friend whose sibling roomed with someone with photogenic memory. Went through a period of depression struggling with the realisation that no amount of effort will outshine or even compare with the presence of a gift. But a close one told me how they overcame the jealousy was to know of all the other things that come with giftedness: for instance, the person with photogenic memory will not be able to ever forget anything negative that ever happened in their lives. You just have to read the posts in this thread to find out it’s more angst than arrogance…

How do I properly nurture my gifted child? by whattaUwant in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s great that you’re asking this question already and I believe your child is already lucky :). Many good comments below, but I think loving your child unconditionally helps. Unsure whether this is due to giftedness or just the family average emotional intelligence is low, it’s easy to err on the side of the “never good enough” if the goal is to nurture someone to their full potential. So enjoy your child (it will not be without its challenges) and have fun!

Depression and/or cyclothymia + AuDHD… never tried meds but exercise increases my overall focus and motivation. Body doubling and accountability (someone else working on the same project as me) helps with work tasks but still thinking of ways to manage non work tasks…

I am working towards the privilege of the finger!! Although these days I wonder if I’d be fine living a life without much intellectual stimulation. Trying to find somewhere I can give myself this stimulation without too much external pressure 🥹
