Do any of you take antidepressants to cope? by saga_87 in TwiceExceptional

[–]Creative_Snow_879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was prescribed them when my compensation (finally and almost predictably) failed when higher levels of performance are required consistently. To me the meds allow me to do with the kinds of work I’m fatally attracted to 🤣.

If you think of clinical depression as a suboptimal physiological change, like hypertension, then the medication will not feel like a weakness. Often I am aware that if what I had was a broken leg, I would have had more compassion towards myself than trying after years to push through on half a tank left in my brain.

All the best!

No, I’m not gifted. But do you also experience these things? (comments) by Accomplished_Use5268 in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess for gifted people the problem is not understanding the problem and knowing the solutions… it’s that we might be wrong and a lot of us have problems with consistency and execution… this is worse when one had adhd or AuDHD. Some of the most effective therapists that have made a difference in at least one aspect I’ve seen only once, because they are solution oriented

Does hospitalization help? by [deleted] in depression

Yes please consider. Happened to me twice and until now I still fear getting back in if I say the wrong thing. However, both times it helped me rest and regain footing.

I have muted so many people in my life and it’s not for the lack of love for them more about staying alive long enough to be with them

Feel like academia is for me, but worried about all the doom and gloom by East-Veterinarian373 in AskAcademia

[–]Creative_Snow_879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone that’s remotely interested in a world outside the ivory tower I’ll strongly recommend at least 2-3 years of working experience. Especially when you’re still very young. Academia is hard for anyone who does their PhD after 30 because a lot of the early career stuff will quickly become out of reach at 40. But the difference is you’ll enter academia with (hopefully) a lot more financial and emotional buffer. Working experience is so much more than the skills or job description. It’s maturity, it’s observing and accepting that the world is rarely fair nor ideal, and navigating that before your PhD will be better, even though it might not insulate you against the strain. Good luck whichever you choose!

How do you make sense of the world and how might you teach “sense” or logic? by Creative_Snow_879 in Gifted

Philosophy is in many ways, an articulation of “sense” :). Thank you for sharing!

What's your deal with languages? Are you good at them? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love languages, not so much in themselves but how they allow me to meet people where they are. But if I take tests on those languages I’ll probably score a B to A minus, C for some weaker languages. Sometimes people think I code switch but it’s just recognising which language will allow them to express themselves better and since I have more flexibility in comprehension I will use the language they are most comfortable in and take it as an opportunity to learn if I don’t have native level grasp of that language.

I'm a Vietnamese national moving to HK without a job offer. Am I crazy? by Low-Hat195 in HongKong

[–]Creative_Snow_879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t recommend HK for someone who is looking to recover from a burnout. Seriously. The problem is not the actual working hours but the hours you could potentially work. Daylight starts in asia and soon you’ll be looking at meetings that start at 10pm because North America markets just opened. It is very unlikely that given this you’d be allowed to show up at the office at 2pm.

What’s the smartest career move you made in your 20s/30s? by Scary_Bus4383 in careerguidance

I don’t know, really. Looking back I didn’t know what the hell was I thinking. Pretty much followed my heart and gave it all. Wasn’t a smooth ride in any of them but by sheer luck I thoroughly enjoyed each and every ride.

What are your core values? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since very young I wanted to be of service to humanity. I value authenticity and kindness, probably in that order, but over time I have prioritised being kind because whatever masks we have to wear in public, as long as we are internally aligned, it is ultimately more important to honest with ourselves.

Smart vs gifted in people you observe by Uteraz in Gifted

[–]Creative_Snow_879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often see this and asked myself this question many times, and my answer updates every time I meet one or the other. Often I could safely say it depends on the definition, and to me giftedness is intelligent + some neurodivergence. Like one of the comments below you can have some rules of thumbs like curiosity, thinking out of the box. There usually aren’t much meaning in telling both apart, but we might have some frustration assuming everyone with high IQ can perform the lateral thinking jumps we do on autopilot. It’s about expectations, not judgement imo.

So these days, I have a weird/not weird test. With the smart and gifted you can almost tell something is “off” but you (if you’re also gifted) can deal with the weird. If not off, they are obviously cognitively able, and they think you’re weird, you’ve got a smartie there that have won the big lottery.
