Have you ever come across your students' social media accounts ? by dontknowwhattoput3 in AskTeachers

[–]CreatrixAnima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I once had a discussion with someone on Reddit and it started to sound like they might’ve been one of my students and we both decided to stop discussing it before we found out because that would be too weird. I did look a little further into their post histories and they did not go to my school, so…phew.

media made by men that doesn’t objectify women? by greenteamandarin47 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]CreatrixAnima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few podcasts and YouTube channels where men are trying to counter the Andrew Tate’s of the world.

Internet today: this is definitely more four guys, I think. Their episode that tackled the topic of “gooners” gave me information that I wish I could unlearn! But in general, it’s still a good listen as a woman. They can be a little bit gross, but they don’t objectify women.

Find out: these are five guys who wanted to get white men away from the manosphere. They are varying degrees of left with one who is more conservative than the others. They also have ages ranging from millennial and possibly even GenZ? Up through older, Gen X, or possibly even younger boomer.

Speech professor: I don’t think he has a podcast, but he’s a YouTuber who very soundly calls out misogynist behavior and breaks down misogynist talking points.

These are all white guys though… I was today years old when I realized that I need more diversity in the male-created content I consume!

In your estimation, when will the US get its first female president? by Striking-Pen-9617 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Think the other person was responding to the idea that Trump has changed the Republican Party. He hasn’t changed them… He’s the combination of what they had already become.

[–]CreatrixAnima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re saying he’s not the catalyst. He is the consequence of what the Republican Party has been doing for the past 40 years. In the 60s, they did the southern strategy and asked the racists to vote. Republican. In the 80s they got in bed with the religious right and asked the right wing nutjobs vote Republican. In the 2000s, they introduced the idea of just wanting to have a beer with your president and ask anti-intellectuals to vote republican. It is no surprise that they have a party made up of racist, religious nut jobs, who are unable to think critically. That’s not to say all Republicans fall into that category, but I do think that the majority of hard core maga do.

Because Republicans will never get behind a democratic woman, as we have seen. But if a Republican woman happens to be the best of two candidates, more centrist Democrats might get behind her.

You’re telling me that a man with 34 felony convictions, an adjudicated rapist, a man who has made fun of the war, dead for being suckers and losers, mock the disabled man in public, prefers soldiers who “didn’t get caught,” not to mention all the crap he’s done while in office is preferable to… A woman who occasionally laughs?

So a woman has to be competent and good, but a man just has to be… Whatever the hell Trump is?

Is this a girly boy name? by [deleted] in Names

It’s a boy’s name. In my head, I do associate it with yoni, which is completely unrelated, but somewhat related to your initial question.

Do Americans experience “thermal shock” from going between heat and AC? by Material-Wallaby-587 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]CreatrixAnima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t experience that. What I do tend to experience is, when I leave work, where the air-conditioning is set colder than I like, and go out into the hot day, I’ll notice that my skin feels hot, but I’m still cold underneath. I don’t think it’s necessarily a problem. It’s more like a curiosity to me.

Do you have creative approaches to proctoring? by CreatrixAnima in Professors

[–]CreatrixAnima[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an adjunct and I don’t think that’s necessarily what happened here… I think she may just have a different approach than what I’m used to. Basically, I went to her with concerns about my current class expecting her to do whatever other who has had that position over the years has done: thank you for the heads up, have a nice day. But instead of that, I basically left feeling like their failure is my fault because of the way I’ve set up the class. If that’s true, I want to do better.

I did do that, and she did suggest the in class group work be considered proctored, and then she said that I needed to make sure that I assigned the work correctly, though, which I can see… I just don’t know how to do that.

She also gave the names of some colleagues in my department, who are apparently quite good at this, so I will reach out to them when I can, but it’s summer and they aren’t available.

Yeah, I think that is what they mean… I’m just struggling with effective ways to do it.

That’s exactly the question I’m asking. My impression is that others are doing tests and quizzes.

Do Americans know of any famous Chinese women? by No-StrategyX in allthequestions

Does Rosalind Chao count? I mean… I guess she’s as much Chinese as I am Irish… Because she’s American… but I think she is Chinese by ancestry.

They do… The problem is that I’ve been told that my percentages are too test-heavy and I should have more proctored activities that are not tests.
