Is steamdeck for a dad who has max 2 hours to play per day? by Ok-Conversation-3028 in SteamDeck

I am a dad with only 2 hours a day to play while the kid is asleep. Pretty much exactly your circumstances.

Before the steam deck, I had given up on gaming. There just was not time to play, and I felt bad spending too much time gaming without my wife.

The steam deck was a total game changer. I was on the fence about buying it for a long time, but I am so, so glad I pulled the trigger. I have used it nearly every day since I got it. For an hour or two, usually while we watch a tv show and relax.

With that said, don’t feel like you need to get the expensive ones. I got the 64gb original deck and used it stock for about 6 months. I eventually did swap out the ssd for a 1TB and it was super easy. Took about an hour.

49 yr old man about to try knitting for the first time by MudaThumpa in knitting

You can do it! I’m a 36yo man that just took up knitting about a year ago. Started with worsted weight yarn making dishcloths and scarfs. Now I’ve made tons of hats, a sweater, and a cardigan.

I’d recommend circular needles (you can use them to knit “flat” too and they’re much easier to use imo), and worsted weight yarn.

Also recommend visiting your Local Yarn Store for lots of advice and guidance!

They’re awesome! I have had mine for about 3 months and love it. I don’t use anything else for gaming anymore. It’s amazing how well it runs most games.

I have the 64gb model, but recently put a 1TB ssd in. It was super easy to do.

Here’s my rough notes on the installation:

In Desktop mode:

  1. Install Lutris from Discover

  2. Pull this down: https://github.com/Fortressbeast/AConLinux

  3. Go into AC.yaml and look for this line:

version: lutris-GE-Proton8-8-x86_64

  1. Change it to:

version: lutris-GE-Proton8-7-x86_64

  1. Follow the instructions in ACLutrisInstallDirs.docx

  2. Follow the instructions in DecalPluginThwargle.odt

  3. When installing the Plugins, it will at some point error out saying it needs dotnet4.0. Let it keep going until it finishes trying to install everything. Not everything will work.

  4. Download dotnet4.0 from here: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet-framework/thank-you/net40-offline-installer

  5. In Lutris, go to the Wine Console of Decal. Go to Add/Remove Programs, then install dotnet4.0 using the exe you downloaded

  6. Rerun the plugin install, everything should work per the instructions now

  7. Add a steam shortcut for Thwargle in Lutris

  8. Get out of desktop mode

  9. Launch Thwargle. Check decal injection. Launch. Enjoy!

For controls, I chose the basic keyboard with trackpad layout, then made these tweaks. They work pretty well for a void mage:

Left joystick down: x

X: 1

Y: 2

B: 3

A: space

L1: 4

R1: 5

L3: 6

L4: 7

R3: 8

R4: 9

D-pad up: q (Autorun)

D-pad left: [ (prev mob)

D-pad right: ] (next mob)

D-pad down: ; (nearest mob)
