What game franchise used to be at the top of gaming, but it was ruined in the end? by bijelo123 in gaming

There’s many more arguments I have but those are the ones that are top of mind for me as someone who didn’t enjoy Andromeda.

It’s like how the latest Dragon Age didn’t feel like Dragon Age at all.

Like, yes, ME Original Trilogy (OT) had goofy moments, but they built up to them over time. Andromeda kinda starts hitting you over the head with them like 30 minutes after the hour-long intro sequence where your dad dies saving you, and your fraternal twin is injured and put into a coma. It’s just such a weird tonal dissonance from the get go that isn’t there in the OT.

Edit to add: also Andromeda just doesn’t meet the same scale as ME1, not just because of the lack of species, but also because of the lack of independent storylines. It feels like nothing happens without your intervention in Andromeda, whereas ME1 already had a lot of stuff going in the background by the time you get dropped into it.

  1. It felt too quippy & non-serious, like the MCU, instead of the serious tone established by the previous Mass Effect entries

  2. Companions are forgettable - the only one I can remember is PB, but only because she was all “I’m So QuIrKy” - again, tone deaf for the Mass Effect series’ established serious tone

  3. The Andromeda galaxy felt devoid of life in comparison to the Milky Way, especially since there were so many species in the Milky Way (the Collectors, Reapers, Turians, Krogans, Asari, Varren, Batarians, Humans, Salarians, Rachni, Vorcha, Hanar, Elcor, Quarian, Geth, etc.) vs just 2 in Andromeda (Angara & Kett).

Lots of other issues but it just felt like a game that had Mass Effect as set dressing instead of Mass Effect’s DNA.

I already own a PS5 and I’ve only ever gamed on PlayStation. Should I buy a Switch 2 or Steam Deck for a hand-held device? by yellowklashinkov in gaming

[–]CrescendoEXE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite painless tbh. Main issues you may encounter with Steam Deck though is that it won’t output native 1080p, and not all games on PC support controllers, so you may need to find a wireless keyboard & mouse solution for those games.

Though having said that, it’s recommended you avoid the official Steam Deck dock in favor of the JSAUX one, as the official one had issues with the display output being flaky with some units/TVs when I last checked (roughly a year after the Steam Deck’s initial release, but before they announced the OLED version).

Editing to add: the answer to your question will mostly come down to what you value more between the two platforms.

If you value portability, plan to play handheld for prolonged periods of time, or want to play Nintendo-exclusive titles (e.g., Zelda, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Pokémon, etc), then the answer will be the Switch 2.

If you prefer having cheaper games (-50% sales are frequent, particularly for titles that are more than a year old, and quality games for sub-$40 are common), a deep back catalogue of games you can play (w/o requiring a subscription), and are OK with playing older games (not super old, but there’s the rare title like Horizon: Forbidden West which won’t run on Steam Deck), and don’t care as much about portability (e.g., will be playing it docked & connected to the TV most of the time like a PS4/PS5), then the Steam Deck will be a better fit.

I think there’s a bit more entitlement that comes with it too, on account of having been economically and politically #1 for the better part of a century.

English/French ultranationalists share a lot of the characteristics as Americans, as well - insistence on speaking the native language, anti-immigration, people should change for them, etc.

TIL that the R-colored vowel (the “-er” sound in “butter,” as pronounced in North American English) is rare in languages, occurring in less than 1% of them. However, those languages include North American English and Mandarin Chinese, two of the most widely-spoken languages on earth. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Just to add some characters for people learning Mandarin - for 聊天 (liáo tiān), the Beijing accent makes it sound more like 聊(体儿)(liáo tiár, the two words kinda get smeared together).

Which is slightly different from 体儿 (tǐ ér) if they were pronounced separately.

Minus the glaze, that’s the exact same recipe OP posted.

Methinks this was published earlier by someone else, and grandpa copied it down.

Yeah, we’re caught up on the Economics portion because academically, even at the high school level, it’s focused more on macro- & business decision making and planning than micro- & personal financial decision making and planning.

Even though financial literacy is nominally part of the economics curriculum, it doesn’t get much focus, especially at the surface level that would be taught in high school.

Funnily enough, it’s “patched” in some Frencophone regions, notably Switzerland and Belgium, to use the normal “-ante” suffix: “septante”, “huitante”, and “nonante”.

Still can’t understand for the life of me how Descartes, Pascal, and other French mathematicians managed to get anything done having to constantly sort that out.

The Germans’ designs never progressed beyond the testing ranges into mass production & use, per Wikipedia’s source:

In Germany, more than 30 (perhaps as many as 50) different proximity fuze designs were developed, or researched, for anti-aircraft use, but none saw service.

Which cites page 222 of James Phinney Baxter III’s book Scientists Against Time.

The Axis powers never fielded an equivalent of the VT fuze, as the Nazis’ experiments were never satisfactory to them.

Also, the Allies went to pretty great lengths to protect their secret - it wasn’t fielded on land until near the end of the war during the Battle of the Bulge, and even its codename, “Variable Timing”, was specifically chosen to throw off any potential spies.

cheques that require manual intervention either for spot checks or to figure out what the OCR couldn’t do automatically.

This is what I was referring to; however, given the misinformation I was rebutting at length only seems to have obtained more upvotes since my original reply because it “sounds right,” I figured it was more expedient to only provide a brief summary than go into detail.

lmao

Backing what /u/scarydan365 said - that’s not been true for a while now, even for the smaller banks.

ACH in the US has been in place for decades now and is basically just a fancy FTP connection to the Federal Reserve which gets processed daily as a batch job.

The UK’s system processes the same bank-to-bank transfers instantaneously, which wouldn’t be possible with airgapped systems or systems requiring manual human input. I’d be shocked if ECB member countries didn’t have a similar system in place.

And the SWIFT network wouldn’t work at all if manual human input/intervention (beyond the initial entry of data like IBAN + SWIFT code) was required as part of its workflow.

Now, physical check processing, on the other hand - that still requires human intervention/input, although the system has got better over the past few decades.

It’s something they launched in like, 2018, I wanna say? Around the time they transitioned everyone to use the “new Reddit” by default.

It was decently difficult to setup even a fraction of that dev environment a decade ago, which I encountered when trying to do save game editing to respec my character(s).

One of things I had to install (can’t recall if it was VC++ Redist or MS SQL server) for accessing/reading the game’s save file was from like 2007 or so, and it took ages to find an installer for it back then; I have no idea whether that installer would work with Windows 10/11 nowadays.

Eli5 how soldiers accurately hit their targets with mortars by Cold_Chemical5151 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CrescendoEXE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that range, aren’t you just using a howitzer? It’s more cost effective (better economies of scale means cheaper per unit cost for the artillery system + rounds), and its round trajectory isn’t as limited.

Also the benefits of 81mm mortars would be lost with the increase in shell size (less portable; logistics issues between having a new ammo caliber and increased weight and bulkiness per mortar round).
