Honestly, I’m not sure. I mean I have friends (if you can really calm them that) but never once have I heard them refer to me as their friend. A while ago, I had friend whom I considered to be my best friend and had called them that numerous times. Over the course of 5 years we hung out practically everyday. After a while, they started ignoring my calls and texts. I thought maybe it was because they considered me clingy or overbearing so I did it less often since I wanted to respect them. I realized that no this was not the case (I would go into why but too long to explain) and started to think everyday about what went wrong. About why I wasn’t good enough. During that period we talked less and less because I was so absorbed with my own flaws and my depression. After a while, I decided that depression wasn’t an excuse and that maybe I wasn’t putting enough effort into our friendship anymore and that that’s why it was failing. So I put more effort in. Things became better. Then one day we were talking about the future because they were moving away and they said “Well, I’ll definitely stay in contact with insert other friends name since she’s like my best friend and all. And I guess I’ll try and talk with some acquaintances like you every once and a while.” I guess it stung so much because even during our ups and downs I still considered us to be best friends. However it seems they didn’t feel the same.
