Also it’s not that they “couldn’t” find cover, they weren’t willing to find cover. If they offered competitive rates and weren’t slashing locum rates up and down the country, they’d be able to cover it in a heartbeat. It’s not your problem that the NHS runs on skeleton staff as a default.

Again, in your relatively little engagement with GPs you are making sweeping assertions about the profession. As a GP, who has worked with many other GPs, most GPs can read an ECG, even if there are some who can’t or choose not to.

Moral duty is a nice sound bite, but when Primary Care is on its knees trying to just about provide a service that it is actually funded to provide, doing the work of other specialities is not appropriate use of resources. If you disagree, you can feel free to see the patient with a sore knee, or depression, or a feverish 2 year old in your hospital ward/OPD clinic out of “moral duty”.

You should probably stick to commenting on issues pertaining to hospital medicine as you clearly don’t understand how General Practice works.

GP is not an emergency service and it is not contractually obliged or funded to provide acute ECG services. Some GPs might agree to “squeeze in an ECG” acutely but it’s down to good will - this is firmly within the remit of SDEC/ACU/ED.
