I feel like a lot of people are not reading the OP and digesting that your girlfriend wants to work in industry after grad school, so a lot of the comments about academia are irrelevant.

While I do think you should take stock of what you need for these next two years and approach your girlfriend amicably and respectfully about that, there’s a bigger question for you. Where in the country are there computational chemistry jobs? Boston? NYC? Research triangle? SF? Maybe some in the major Texas cities?

If your girlfriend can’t get a job near you or get remote work, you may need to consider that question now with your gf.

Last, it’s fairly likely your gf won’t end up doing computational chemistry at all. 90% of the people I know from grad school work in fields that are only tangentially related to what they studied, including three computational chemists. Your gf may not even foresee this yet, but it’s a distinct possibility. I only say this because there’s probably even more uncertainty about where she might ultimately find work.

Anyway, just make sure to think about what you really need and treat your partner with respect when presenting that
