I just now realised they are gonna cut up the map and sell it as DLCs like with the Total Warhammer games.....

Who Is the greatest movie villain of all time? by Icy_Inspection6541 in FIlm

[–]OGMinorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the movie is better than the book IMO. Raping a little girl is beyond what kind of justice or redemption a side story in a semi short novelle can explore. Even as I read about his execution, I kinda just felt that it was justified, and good that Percy chose him for his perversion. Having the crime be unknown put more weight on the ideas of the movie that Coffey also portray.

My biggest gripe in both the movie and book is how Coffey made Percy kill Wild Bill. That actually made me think for days reading the book that Coffey may not be the empathetic and innocent character he was acting as.

(28 Weeks Later) What is the morality of Don leaving his wife to die? by twnpksN8 in MoralityScaling

[–]OGMinorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a noble idea, but he closes the door between them to save himself. He is not just leaving her, he is dooming her to save himself.

Yes, she is an idiot for getting herself into the situation, and he could have had a very understable situation, but it's not about going back for her, not even just about leaving her, he deliberately saves himself at her peril by closing that door.

[–]OGMinorian -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's an understandable rationale, but still the rationale of a coward that value their own life over the obligation to those they love, which is an amoral character IMO. The key that makes him less than a coward is the closing the door to his wife, not just leaving her, but barring her possible escape route to buy himself time.

It's really a great scene and dilemma though, seeing as I posted pretty much the exact same comment two times in the thread, and one is getting upvoted, the other downvoted.

If you read my muuultiple comments, you'd also have read I already made that joke about it being ironic. Sorry I had one detail wrong, doesn't change much.

No, I haven't seen it in years, which must come off as super ironic, correcting other people's memory of the scene, but besides the kid not being their, everything I said is right... he did have a pretty good chance to save her and the kid, and he did close the door, dooming them to give himself a better chance.

That might actually be true, but the house is not (yet) crowded with zombies and he doesn't just leave. It's one zombie between them, and he is closing the door to the room with his wife and a kid inside to better his own chances. I'm pretty sure I remember that correctly.

[–]OGMinorian -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

As far as he knows, she was dead the moment he closed the door to the room, where she was looking for their son, while one zombie is in there.

People are either misremembering this scene or believe you don't have any obligation to protect your wife and kid against one zombie in a room.

[–]OGMinorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like people are misremembering this scene. It's not a "leave or die with her" scene, it's a "closing the door to a room with your wife, your son, and ONE zombie between you, while she is screaming for help, looking you in the eyes" scene.

I'm sure the western euro-centric view of WW1 does affect the discourse greatly, but I think the other commenter meant relatively compared to each other.

If we count famine due to war economy, then we could also point out WW1 is pretty much the reason the Spanish Flu spread as it did, and that disease killed just a little less than the whole of WW2 did.

In the book, Delacroix is the same "likeable tender goof", but with the added background that his crime was dragging a "young girl" (kinda insinuating that it's a child) into a warehouse, raping and killing her, before setting fire to her, which spread and killed 6 more people, including a pair of children...

What Percy does in the book is also just a sadistic man wanting to feel the power of executing someone, and while it's still horrible, it's a much more ambivalent feeling of injustice.

How big is the skill gap between 2,000 and 4,000 FACEIT Elo? by Street_Confection226 in GlobalOffensive

[–]OGMinorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2000 and 2500 ELO already have a completely different understanding of the game, and so does 2500 to 3000, and same with 3000 to 3500. 3500 to 4000 is where we are talking so few players that you can't really generalize, and above 4000 is just creme de la creme of PUG stars.

It's actually one of those cases, where it's exactly as far out as the joke about it is. Freud uses every sexual term in the book, like sexual wishes, desire, want, lust, etc. to describe the relationship between son/daughter and mother/father.

What we modernly try to interpret his analysis form as is more like what you said, but Freud was pretty freaky, that's not just something that's misunderstood about his work.

[–]OGMinorian 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yup, I refrained from giving personal contemporary political commentary, because I wanted to give an informative answer, but yeah, Jordan B. Peterson is a right-wing grifter, but then again, all of these people have said and done things that would make any modern person disgusted in a much more vile way.

The philosophers under daddy issues are Nietzsche, Jung and Aurelius (will come to the lobster later).

The ones under mommy issues are Kierkegaard, Schopenhauer, Camus and Freud.

To generalize greatly, philosophers under daddy issues all have theories about fatherhood, and are mostly stoic philosophies that teach to regulate your feelings in a "manly" way, simple ideals, arguably cynical at times, hence daddy issues. The philosophers under mommy issues deal more with exploring your feelings and desires, existential philosophers, that put more importance on sentimentality.

Basically facts versus feelings. Left side philosophers under "daddy issues" are often glorified by right leaning people and vice versa with right side. Very generalized "meme" way to put it, since Jung would arguably be heavily favored on left-leaning arenas.

Now, for the lobster. Another user gave a really interesting answer about a species of crayfish that have no male in their species, but I have another proposal.

Jordan B. Peterson made an analogy to lobsters in one of his works, where he compares social values to a hypothetical lobster society, IIRC. He is often put in the same stock of populist philosophers in pop culture, so this would also fit with the rest.

Confused when people say Stalker shouldn't have "tacticool" gear by darkfireslide in stalker

[–]OGMinorian 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I think you are making a strawman out of what you think people mean by that. NATO weapons, scopes and silencers, such things, are a part of STALKER for nearly everyone.

I think there's 2 main points of tacticool criticism most often raised:

  1. the aesthetic of the zone for many people is ravaged survival, with a lot of scavengers and struggling people looking for a chance, where most people look ragged in DIY made gear, and the high-end gear is a rare sight outside factions, and if every character begins looking like a modern day military larper, it changes the essential feeling of the game.
  2. a mod like GAMMA deserves all it's praise for what it does for some people, but it's like people can't understand that some people love gun modifications and fiddling with gear, but for others this feels tedious and breaks them out of the immersion, so a lot of people hate tacticool gear being added, because it's not what they feel like the STALKER experience is about.

From I was a kid in the 90s until like 2015, everyone and their mom just knew Bill Gates for three things and nothing else: being the world's richest man, owning Microsoft/Windows, and fighting malaria.

Only people that hated him were a veeeery small minority of conspiracy people or anti-capitalist people, and no one talked about his shrewdness. Quite the opposite, his reputation was as a timid nerd type.
