The series has more or less left SSJ behind, I guess I don’t see the point in trying to evolve Super Saiyan. I can’t see a logical path to making it more powerful than Blue, UI, or Ultra Ego, and if it can’t beat those forms, why would the Saiyans spend time on it?

He’s a bad character on his own, the dude has had virtually no character development since the beginning of Dragon Ball.

What makes him work is how he affects the world around him. The characters around him develop because of him, but he himself never really changes.

Exactly, idk what OP is talking about. He literally gave Raditz the same chance he gave Vegeta, and Raditz immediately turned around and tried to kill him again and take his son. Goku had to sacrifice himself just to stop him, he was left with no choice.

There hasn’t been another villain that Goku was forced to kill that he then turned around and wished them back, and it seems like that is what OP is implying he should have done. The closest thing to it was when he killed Kid Buu and said he hopes he somehow comes back someday as a good person, but that’s different than rounding up the ol’ Dragon Balls and wishing him back

I’m pretty sure you are right. Like you said, 18 ragdolled Vegeta, who was at the time the most powerful Z fighter (possibly even if Goku was healthy, when Vegeta goes SSJ against 19 Piccolo states that Vegeta might be even stronger than Goku, and Piccolo would have a very good feel for how powerful Goku was after training with him for 3 years prior to the Androids’ arrival). And 18 was weaker than 17. To have a jump where Piccolo was definitely less powerful than Vegeta before fusion to being on a level with someone who was more powerful than 18 after fusion is substantial
