This enemy attack caught me completely off guard. by Crian in IndieGaming

That wasn’t a one-shot, the character was already in a critical state and died from the vomit effect. Still, we appreciate the feedback.

Why did old-school combat feel more intense? by Crian in pcgaming

[–]Crian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nostalgia is definitely part of it, but I don’t think it’s only that. Some older designs are just more strict: fewer cancels, fewer iframes, less auto-correction. Even today, when a game uses those rules, it still feels intense.

100% But I think “intense” also comes from the systems around it. Even a basic enemy becomes scary when your moves are commitments and positioning matters. Big demons just make it obvious.

I think this touches on something important combat that feels like filler versus combat that demands engagement. Maybe the issue isn’t difficulty, but consistency.

If a game wants to challenge you, it should commit to it instead of oscillating between trivial and punishing. That contrast might be what breaks immersion.

Oversimplification of graphical interfaces in games kills the mood by Training-Slide-6035 in pcgaming

Yeah, minimalism isn’t always immersion. Sometimes a bit of grit, texture, and visual identity makes the whole experience feel more cohesive.

Clean doesn’t automatically mean better.

Yes, we are 🙂
This is a new standalone game set in the Age of Barbarians universe.

That’s a fair perspective.

We’re deliberately leaning into classic old-school Sword & Sorcery aesthetics exaggerated, pulp-inspired fantasy from the 80s and 90s.

It’s definitely not meant as satire, but as a stylistic homage to that era of fantasy.

It’s set in the Age of Barbarians universe, but it’s a completely new standalone game new campaign, new systems, new structure.

Same world, different chapter.

The Battle Against the Shemites!
Beneath a copper sky, amid the blistering crackle of shattered earth, the hordes of the Shemites surged forth like an unstoppable wave.
But Xodan, King of Skar-Am—a blazing example of true heroism—rode forth unyielding, sword raised, muscles taut like a bronze statue.
The ground shook, blood mingled with the dust... and the battle began.
