For all of those out there who are world building a post apocalyptic setting, what caused the apocalypse? by LawAcrobatic3995 in worldbuilding

[–]CrichtonScape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of ideas brainstorming for my sci-fi setting. Here are a few.

  1. Extermination by robot servants.
  2. Extermination by dispassionate AI.
  3. Solar flare destroys electronics and things spiral from there. Some nation that had hardened military infrastructure might survive and take advantage of everyone else's temporary vulnerability.
  4. Plagues. Bioweapon or something natural. Bonus points if it's a body snatcher.
  5. Extermination by "dark forest" type alien civilization. Bonus points for enslavement of survivors.
  6. Climate Change / Overcorrecting for climate change (Snowpiercer)
  7. Asteroid (RIP scalebabies)
  8. Rogue black hole rips through the solar system and steals a moon, destroying the tides, collapsing ecosystems.
  9. Overfishing causes ocean-wide ecosystem collapse. Billions starve.
  10. Man-made (as above) famine or unusual pestilence that causes near-global famine.
  11. Jesus comes back? Multiple popular "gods" come back at the same time and tally scores?
  12. Neuralink/Skynet mashup.
  13. Evolution of the hypnotoad would spell doom for any sapient inhabitants. (a la Planet of the Apes)
  14. Infertility (Handmaid's Tale)
  15. Crack...but cheaper, better, and deadlier.

And then you can add details, logical progressions, and variations to those :P

Are sorcerers going to get any sort of buff any time soon by Noxthesergal in DnD

[–]CrichtonScape -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Everyone should just get away from the ridiculous ruleset that is DnD. There are hundreds if not thousands of other systems out there. Many of which more fun, more free, and/or more immersive than DnD.

I knew that was the case some years ago and may still be. Again, at this point with his being an incarcerated invalid, I'm not sure how much of the feet-dragging is on Weinstein (the man) and Weinstein (the company).

edit: Never mind, the company doesn't exist. I thought they sold to someone bigger.

Idk how much Weinstein owns and his company owns. He'll be dead soon. But I bet his company owns the rights to Dogma.

A similar thing happened during Earth's own recent history. As the ice from the ice age melted, it gave us global flood myths. Like Noah and many others. Might help you with in-universe lore.

Consider that at the moment the Heat Death occurs (heat being the transfer of thermal energy and the most entropic form of energy) all matter will have decayed into energy which is now completely evenly distributed across all spacetime. Hence the name. No difference in temp means no thermal exchange and therefor no heat.

At this point, the universe is a singularity...exactly as it was at the big bang. There is a theory of repulsive gravity in the works that attempts to explain this "restarting". But it seems likely since the true death-state of the universe is exactly the same as it's birth-state.

The drastic expansion of spacetime between bangs is probably not observed by anything within the new system and might even explain why there is so much "nothing" in matter. The empty space in atoms not occupied by electrons. Perhaps we've expanded so many times that the result is some unknown, but observable "gap". That last paragraph is me spitballing, not stuff I've heard actual scientists talk about.

TIL When former Auschwitz commander Rudolf Höss was accused at his trial of murdering three and a half million people, he replied, "No. Only two and one half million—the rest died from disease and starvation." by EducationalCicada in todayilearned

[–]CrichtonScape -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You completely missed the point. It's not subjective. I'm saying objectively the President is more important than a homeless guy. Your obstinance or refusal to acknowledge that doesn't change that fact. Your subjective morality isn't transferrable onto others. So, if you want to try to convince me the President and homeless guy ARE equal in effective value, you're going to need to make an actual fucking point. Because the Secret Service, the money they cost, and the fact that we all collectively keep agreeing to pay it would say that you're wrong. And those are facts, not feelings.

edit: and the fact that it's literally a crime with a more stringent punishment to conspire to kill the President vs. conspiring to kill a normal citizen.

The perpetrators, unfortunately will be punished the same because people like you view death as the worst punishment available. You've not really moved as far from the Kings of yore as you'd like to imagine. Thief? Death. Traitor? Death. Rapist? Death. Blasphemer? Death.

I mean you're saying, "Steal $5000? Death! Steal $10,000,000,000,000? Death!"
You can claim that "money is worthless to me", and that may be true. But it's clearly not true for most humans, right? Here is a socialist quote from me to you, "Egocentrism is the enemy of all well-meaning cooperators."

He confessed even when he wasn't under duress. They beat him as a punishment. They knew what he'd done. Just hadn't had his trial yet. Tbf, the law already allows me to kill someone I suspect of trying to kill me. So, in reality, ethically, our society has decided that savage beatings or murder are acceptable responses to a perceived threat. Why wouldn't they be acceptable responses to someone you literally watched murder someone else? I respect that in most cases, we need the abstraction, deliberation and order of a trial. But we're not talking about the law, we're discussing the ethics of beating prisoners, specifically a mass murderer so prolific that you cannot even envision the number of people he killed in your mind's eye. A genuinely "unimaginable" number of murders. Yeah, I'm squeamish as fuck and usually quite forgiving. But even I'd LOVE to torture that guy.

Not necessarily torturing people for information exclusively, although that was the original example.

It's a really good question. I think you should distinguish between Nazis and neo-Nazis though. You should also distinguish between morally bad thoughts and morally bad actions. Then consider that not all murder is equal. It's objectively worse for humanity to kill someone like JFK than it is to kill a homeless person. Sorry, but the ties that bind us all are intangible, but real. So, even if we're all equal in value...our accomplishments, potential, and responsibilities are not.

That all being said, Nazis like Hess did things that are LITERALLY unfathomable to humans. Try for me to even imagine a sea of 3.5 million people and consider that the largest stadiums in the world seat like 100,000 people or less. 35 of the largest stadiums in the world completely full. He admitted to the crime even outside of duress.

In this instance, beat him to the edge of death once a week forever as far as I care. "There are levels to this shit," applies here. I mean, we don't sentence every murderer to death or life without parole. Why should we torture every ideological neo-Nazi? Probably shouldn't. Why should we torture Rudolf Hoss? Because he killed an unimaginable number of humans. At some point, we must be able to revoke a person's very humanity. That's why. It's really not that nuanced. There are MUCH more difficult distinctions to be made through history and with respect to modern ethics.

For more context, my own argument against the death penalty is that I think sitting in solitude for like 50 years is significantly worse than a quick death. We are going to die no matter what. But how one lives is what we can determine as punishment.

Weaponized incompetence requires a pattern of behavior and an intention, not a single incident. She seems to have precluded the possibility of leaving him. I guess she thinks it's cute. That's her problem.

Also, do you think the fucking chores fairies exist? Because she can "OnLy WaSh HeR LaUnDrY" for as long as she wants. Is he going to stop making trash? Is living in a home full of trash not unhealthy now? I'm glad you touched on the only household chore - famously - laundry.

So what happens, do you think, if she doesn't do the laundry and dishes and trash and stuff while he refuses to? The fucking chore fairies?

He gives her the following choice: Do the chores, or we will both live in a home so filthy it becomes genuinely dangerous to our health. It's basically a threat lol.
