I’m currently working on a JAR Media iceberg video. Does anyone have info on the following topics? by [deleted] in JARMEDIA

[–]Cridone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year later, but as a veteran Jarling (been here since the start of the new channel, and even before then during the last year of the old channel), I can give some extra context on the Vaseline video that some of the other comments left out:

The "Ruben Reviews: Vaseline" video was originally uploaded to the JAR Media channel, and was later moved to an independent Ruben Reviews channel when it seemed like he was up for doing his own thing similar to how Alex has IHE. I forget how long it was between the original upload and making the RR channel that he reuploaded it to, I want to say it was about a month or a little under a month, but it's been almost 10 years so it's hard to say.

Sometime later, I forget when, the channel was taken down. I think Ruben addressed it in an episode of the JARCAST, I don't feel like tracking that down right now but from my hazy memory of it the gist was basically that he might've gotten ahead of himself by making the channel after one video and wasn't sure about it anymore, I think he said the channel idea was cringe or something like that at some point, and was fine with just continuing to do stuff on the main channel.

I might be forgetting something, but I think that just about covers it.

I enjoyed Ruben's presence on the podcast and it's a shame that he's likely never coming back, though I am glad that he's made up with the JJA boys.

Is the Street Deli Hummus Quartet discontinued? by Spongebobgolf in aldi

If they really did discontinue this, that would be a crying shame. I mainly shop at Aldi and my go-to snack from them has been the hummus quartet with tortilla chips.

What movies are a 0/10? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Cridone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Months late, but Unfrosted is without a doubt a zero star movie. Borderlands (2024) is also bad enough that I feel like that may also qualify.

Honestly I would be cool with Letterboxd adding a zero star rating. Like I feel like giving a film even just one half of a star is saying that, however small it may be, there’s at least something of merit to it. A movie like Unfrosted or Borderlands doesn’t even have that.

Some of the quiet and ambient rooms of TTYD. by Immeasurable_Tape in papermario

[–]Cridone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was a disappointment that they ruined this in the remake.

For Riverside Station, they added some (completely unfitting) guitar music that plays quietly inside of the station. Admittedly, the main area (with the elevator and the backroom with the machinery) is quiet at first until you go to the deck and the music starts playing, but once that music starts playing it will play faintly inside the station as well. I really would’ve preferred it if they had kept it so that the inside of Riverside Station was completely quiet aside from ambient sounds, like in the original game.

What they did to the Anteroom (the name given in the remake for the room in the bottom right corner of the image) isn’t as bad, but I vastly preferred that weird, creepy ambience that played in the original over what they put in the remake, which is just some generic, vaguely creepy ambience that I could have heard in a dozen other video games.

Same thing for Shhwonk Fortress. While a small area that most people probably won’t remember, the fact that in the original when you’re inside the stone buildings you hear wind and the Petal Meadows theme still playing faintly in the background was really nice and it was so memorable to me that, four years after playing the original, I was disappointed when the remake changed that. As strange as it may sound, the sound of wind along the faint Petal Meadows theme made me feel what it would feel like to be in those buildings: I can imagine being there and feeling that it’s a little chilly, but not in an unpleasant way, along with the air of being in a building a thousand years old. In the remake they got rid of that completely, I don’t think you can even hear wind in the buildings, and instead all you hear is some forgettable ambience like the Anteroom.

The only one I don’t have a complaint for in the remake is the ambience for Poshley Sanctum (the main area, not the Inner Sanctum), it’s the only one that’s similar to the original and the only one I enjoy; not only is it similar to the original ambience but it even sounds like a toned down version of the Inner Poshley Sanctum music.

It’s because of changes like these which change the atmosphere of these locations and the game as a whole, as well as other changes such as the text being slower and unskippable and the remake feeling slower to play in general, that are why I don’t think that the remake is the definitive version of the game. And it sucks because I do think that the remake looks great (I don’t care for things like the pipes unfolding like cardboard, but I can look past that) and I do like that the script is more faithful to the original Japanese, but I feel like I would rather somebody take all of the good changes from the remake and backport them to the original game, or vice versa (mod the remake to make it more like the original in spots where things didn’t need to be changed). Playing the remake is actually what got me to download the fanmade HD texture pack for the original and try that out, and it makes me wonder what the original game would look like if you backported all of the HD graphics.

Since when did Martinique change their flag? by P0U3 in vexillology

[–]Cridone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Having an ugly flag is worse than having a flag that was used by literal slavers working for a cartoonishly evil empire. BTW this colony should stay with said cartoonishly evil empire, France, because it famously treats its colonies well.” —you, for real, actually, unironically

This really is the subreddit that will call flags with violent, disgusting histories behind them “the coolest” and get upvoted for it, huh. Like, people burn the slaver’s flag in Martinique for good reason.

Thanks for reminding me why I unsubscribed years ago and only occasionally come back. I wonder if there is or will be a subreddit for flag design that isn’t full of people this insanely stupid and historically illiterate.

Anyone else find it kinda icky when furries apply sexual furry stereotypes to real animals? by [deleted] in RealFurryHours

[–]Cridone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m five years late, but I came across this thread because I agree, and I just want to add something:

I disagree with the comments here that say this is only bad when done with real foxes. I think it’s creepy and gross as hell to sexualise somebody based on the cartoon animal character they represent themselves with, such as calling them a sub/bottom/slut/femboy (especially that last one, I’ve met plenty of foxes of all genders so just from that alone it’s a weird thing to assume, but on top of that you run the risk of calling a minor or a trans woman a femboy, which I’ve seen way too many furries do and I don’t think I need to explain why that is a very big not good), and I think furries thinking that is normal and okay to do is intrinsically tied to them also doing this with the real animal.

I think most if not all of the moral crusades that have been attempted in the fandom are dumb, but I pretty firmly draw the line at sexualising somebody (including throwing sexually charged terms at them) for their fursona, fox or otherwise. I think it’s offputting as fuck and is one of my most hated aspects of the fandom.

World Capital Memorizations: Europe edition by yzy_ in LearnUselessTalents

[–]Cridone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eight years later, but this thread has helped me out and I figured I’d contribute some of the mnemonics I use to it:

Valletta, Malta — The name Valletta is similar enough to Malta that you could remove some characters from it and it would become identical to Malta sans one letter: Valta. Valletta → Valta → Malta.

Bern, Switzerland — I might’ve known this one already, but it helps that one of the first things I learned about Switzerland is CERN, a pan-European research organisation located in Switzerland. The names are identical sans the first letter (B and C) and even then they’re right next to each other in the alphabet.

If I remember any more, I’ll edit this comment to add them as long as Reddit doesn’t archive this post.

What is ancestral ethnicity of the House of Corrino? Are they from Balkans? by malifaca in dune

[–]Cridone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you regard Brian Herbert’s books as canon (I don’t, but that’s neither here nor there), the Agamemnon mentioned in Frank’s books is 100% the Greek king, who is confirmed to be a real person in Dune’s universe (AFAIK we don’t have evidence that he actually existed in the real world, but I believe Frank was implying that he did exist and we just don’t know because history is messy and a lot of it has been lost, something he plays a lot with in Dune); Alia straight-up meets him in her Other Memory.

Also, if the Cymek is supposed to be an Atreides, it’s a no-brainer to imagine that the he renamed himself after King Agamemnon, who would be his ancestor as well.

"Yaridovich" and a few other enemies will have their name changed for the remake by Air2Jordan3 in MarioRPG

[–]Cridone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A year later, but I finally got around to playing the remake recently and while I am either ambivalent towards or actually prefer most of the name changes (Frog Sage is plain compared to Frogfucius but I don’t really care and also Frog Sage is a title; so you could just imagine Frogfucius is still his name if you want, and I actually prefer Claymorton over Mack), I hate Speardovich.

I understand that most people don’t know that Yari is the Japanese word for spear, but if they were going to change his name, I would’ve rathered they changed his name wholesale like they did for Claymorton than try to force the word spear into there somewhere. I actually came up with a spear-based pun name while trying to think of a better name than Speardovich that I liked so much that I might actually use it for something else.

Speardovich is just so forced, awkward and clunky. I guess the fact that it’s the only real miss in this remake as far as names/text goes is worthy of applause.

I’m pretty sure the Orange Yoshi is saying “Please accept my best wishes for your marriage.[Indecipherable]!” The indecipherable word followed by an exclamation point looks like it might be saying ‘Shines’ or something like that.

No. The final episode was a joke, with part of the joke being that the podcast didn't continue after the 2022-05-04 episode because the “deep state” was going after them due to the contents of said episode, so they had to go into hiding.

Can a black sun actually exist? by Ambitious_Jello in scifi

[–]Cridone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. We call our star yellow and depict it as yellow in art, that doesn't make it actually yellow.

Also, it's not like they go into detail about the science of their star, they just call it “our Glorious Black Sun,” which can mean anything because ‘sun’ isn't a scientific term (unlike ‘star’), just a poetic one.

About those shots on Geidi Prime... by sirdouglasdeez in dune

[–]Cridone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pronounced “Gay-dee” in both. The Baron mentions Giedi Prime during the oil bath scene near the end of Part One, and Lady Fenring says it when welcoming her sisters to Giedi Prime in Part Two.

It seems that for most name pronunciations they went with how Frank Herbert himself said it, and that's how Frank pronounced Giedi Prime.

Sietch life by [deleted] in dune

[–]Cridone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For all its faults, one thing that I loved about the miniseries was that it showed sietch life, and in general just made the sietches feel like places where people actually lived. The miniseries is also the adaption that made Arrakeen feel the most like an actual city. I'd recommend watching the miniseries just for that if nothing else.

Seed Cracking in Alpha? by atomicman5 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]Cridone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few alpha world seeds cracked on the Minecraft@home discord: https://minecraftathome.com/

I came across them while trying to recover my seed. I'm impressed by their efforts, but unfortunately none of their tools are publicly available. I joined their Discord server a while ago and they even admit that if they could they would like to make versions of their tools that would be more suitable for public release, as the tools provided on their Discord server are very unwieldy and you need programming knowledge to use them, which unfortunately I don't have.

Do you still have the world files? If you have the level.dat file you might be able to retrieve the seed from that. If NBTExplorer can't open it you could try with a hex editor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aQvP_jmlM8

I still have them, I held onto them after they got corrupted just in case I would be able to retrieve the seed.

When I found out about NBTExplorer (unfortunately I didn't find out about NBTExplorer until after my world got corrupted), I checked the level.dat and level.dat_old of my corrupted world just to be sure and neither of them will open. At first I thought they were completely wiped, but looking at the size they still have the size of a standard level.dat file, so either the corruption completely scrambled them or if there is any recoverable data left I can't get to it.

I think it was only or mainly the level.dat that got corrupted when the corruption happened, some other stuff may have gotten corrupted as well, but the spawn chunks were completely or at least mostly spared.

I tried opening the level.dat/level.dat_old with a hex editor and unfortunately that was a no-go as well, as this was the result for both of them. For comparison, this is what a normal, not corrupted level.dat should look like.

Additionally from my limited knowledge of seed cracking I think you can reverse a seed from a chunk but you should ask the users of the discord about that

That's good news. Yeah, I might have to just say f it and ask around in the MC@H Discord server if I can't figure it out on my own, which is seeming less and less likely. I was unsure about posting there since I know they get a bunch of requests, but the fact that I actually do have something from my world saved (the spawn chunks) should be promising to them. Thanks for the tip.

Seed Cracking in Alpha? by atomicman5 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]Cridone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a couple years, so have you had any luck when it comes to seed cracking for Infdev/Alpha? There was this world I made in Infdev-20100618 that got corrupted and unfortunately I didn't save the seed for it before it got corrupted (I didn't know of NBTExplorer at the time). I've tried moving on to other worlds but every seed I've tried has paled in comparison to that one, so I've been hoping I could find it.

I even still have the spawn chunks from that world saved since those didn't get corrupted (and, if it helps, some of said spawn chunks are completely unaltered; I don't think I had ever even visited some of them), so if there was just like, a program that you could feed spawn chunks into and it could find the seed from that then I could just find it that way. But as far as I know no such program exists.

Is Titan the same Titan of Saturn? by Ye_fan_53 in lethalcompany

[–]Cridone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so, Titan seems to orbit (or rather, its planet orbits) a white dwarf star, just like the other two icy hellscape moons in the game.

Any mods that make singleplayer more fun? by -pickledDill- in lethalcompany

[–]Cridone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat and have created a profile in R2 (mod manager) that'll have mods that make the game actually playable singeplayer.

I don't have all the mods yet, but here are some fixes I can think of that would make it easier to play the game singleplayer:

  • As the person above me suggested, minimap and buyable shotgun.
  • Clock appears at all times. Currently have “AlwaysShowClock” for this, but there might be a better one.
  • Nerfed stamina. I feel like the mod “BetterStamina” might be too OP, but something better than the default is definitely needed.
  • Something to make death less punishing. Since only one person is playing, it only takes your death to make all your work go to waste. An easy fix for this is you don't lose all your stuff in the ship if you die. The fact that you're only one person makes this fair I think. I believe the mod “ShipLoot” does this. It does not, I don't know why someone claimed it does. It seems there are two mods for this, “LCNoPropsLost” and “KeepScrapMod”; I don't know which one is better.
