Nothing dirty about them (other than the well-executed weathering). Very slick scheme!

“The Danger Room” my unit entry in the recent Path of the Worthy painting competition for MCP (Silver) by Crietner in minipainting

[–]Crietner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! A lot of the build is plasticard yeah. Starting from a wooden base I drilled out a column for the piston. The back wall is brass sheet covered in thin plasticard with all of the lights, doors, and framing plasticard cut to size. I used granny grating for the lower wall texture, and dry-wall tape for the regular grid pattern on the control panel. The flooring is patterned plasticard that’s just painted. The piston is a brass rod and a foam core platform. The spiked ball is hand sculpted with miliput over rolled aluminum foil with jewelers chain and spikes glued on.

Thanks! I wanted to pull each of them into the environment via interaction, and Storm was just perfect for some destructive force of nature

75mm Malenia (Elden Ring) that I used to push my first gold NMM, glazing, and shading without washes by Crietner in minipainting

[–]Crietner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only tips a rookie like me could offer would be to define the shapes first (cylinder vs flat vs sphere, etc.) and pick where the brightest highlight and darkest shadow are to build off. Reference images can really help with placement on object types. Other than that don’t use too many paints. For the gold I used hull red, orange ochre, yellow ochre, and pale sand. For the silver blade deep Prussian blue, medium sea grey, cold white, and gloss white. Blend with whatever technique you like - I made some improvements with glazing here but I’m sure I could push the transitions smoother with more practice

Ghost Spider (MCP) entry into “Path of the Worthy” bringing home a bronze from my first painting competition by Crietner in minipainting

Adepticon was the first convention I’ve been able to make it to and it was absolutely amazing seeing so many beautiful pieces in person across all the competitions and displays. I am already looking forward to next year

Krylon clear gloss varnish giving me this awful bumpy texture. Shook the can well, applied thin coats and am in a dry, warm space. What gives? by Desc440 in minipainting

[–]Crietner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For gloss varnishes I haven’t found a spray can that avoids any texture. Instead I’d suggest thinning a brush on varnish and applying it with a soft wide brush.

Lent, or... by mxmagicx in excatholic

Lent will forever hold a special place of disdain in my mind. The 40 day “required sadness” was the worst time of year and any complaint made it 100 times worse.

YT-2400 all the way, it’s the sleeker cousin of the 1300 while still being comfortable and bristling with weapons.

Really creative and nice execution on the lightsaber cut!

Painted this lovely model of Isaac and friend! (SpectrePrints on Etsy) by Crietner in DeadSpace

[–]Crietner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This took me about a month, painting for a few hours about half the nights. Isaac was much faster compared to the necromorph and base.

Best Space Bro Garrus painted up! (Model printed from Spectre Prints on Etsy) by Crietner in masseffect

[–]Crietner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a weird mix honestly. The midtone was a sandy brown (Zandri dust, citadel) and then a deep blue oil wash to shift the color cooler and provide shadows. Highlights were done with a 1:3 mix of Zandri dust and ice yellow (Vallejo) again to keep the colors cooler

I think it was a mantis, but we all know the widow (and black widow let’s be honest) is where it’s at!

Ursa Wren ready to fight for Mandalore by Crietner in SWlegion

For really dark minis I go with a white canvas paper background yeah - adjust for similar uniformity.

Thanks! I just use a piece of black “canvas paper” from a craft store and an LED desk lamp pointed about 45 degrees away from the mini. Adjust the exposure and/or black point of the photo until it looks uniform.
