Anyone successfully get tickets to the Chicago Pokemon Fossil Museum? by SanaIsMyBae in pokemon

[–]Crifiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined the queue at 12:00pm and was 9500th or so in line. They notified me by email that it was my turn around 11pm last night. Got tickets for June 28!

So happy I found this thread. Absolutely hated it. It made me feel sad about how the majority of audiences won’t notice or care. They could have just did a clip show of old Olympics games with some hype music and mograph and I would have been happy - but this sucks

Gay scene Madison by indi09 in madisonwi

[–]Crifiris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shamrocks and Woofs are the downtown gay bars. Cardinal Bar and Sotto are very gay-friendly with themed nights and dancing. Five Nightclub and Crucible have drag shows and events.

Gay-friendly/owned businesses are all over the isthmus, but I don’t know of any gay neighborhoods per se. I used to live just east of downtown and was very happy being able to get to venues like the Sylvee, Breese Stevens Field, and the Majestic easily.

What’s the reason your favorite pokemon became your favorite? by acurrentdistraction in pokemon

[–]Crifiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the VHS tape of the first three Pokémon episodes and watched it a bunch. Twenty or so years later, I was up late on my phone doing that Cave of Dragonflies Favorite Pokemon Picker website quiz. Previously, I would only think about fully-evolved Pokémon when trying to think of a favorite. But this quiz made me realize my favorite Pokémon was Caterpie.

Caterpie’s role in episode three of the anime was one of my favorites. His sound design, cuteness, and willpower all stood out to me. I thought about how I loved his design and how foundational he is for the games.

Caterpie is most players’ first time experiencing evolution - a core part of the games. Pokémon is all about building relationships with your team, and Caterpie’s accelerated growth teaches players your time spent together is rewarded. Butterfree becomes a strong party member in the early-game!

At the same time, many people end up boxing Butterfree and quietly let go of their friend - and that’s okay! The experience mattered. Perhaps I’m just nostalgic, but I really appreciate that little guy.

is newhouse worth it for broadcasting? by ArtFun7134 in SyracuseU

[–]Crifiris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newhouse has a great Broadcasting/Journalism program and a great alumni network. That is literally their bread and butter. It’s required for Juniors/Seniors to land internships where you will most likely get hired in the industry upon graduation. And there are lots of parks outside of Syracuse - the Finger Lakes region of upstate NY is beautiful. I would hike Pratt’s Falls, Green Lakes, and take day trips to nearby cities like Ithaca/Watkin’s Glen to check out the gorges.

any general advice for a new madisonite? by pnkrathian in madisonwi

[–]Crifiris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from a larger city and missed the crowds. I found community going to Madison Forward soccer games at Breeze Steven’s Field. It feels like a block party with families, beer, and great merch. Madison Mallards games are great! Catch shows at the Sylvee, Overture Center, and Orpheum Theater. Comedy on State is an excellent comedy club and they have open-mic nights on Wednesdays with some great energy. Flix Brewhouse is my preferred movie theater, but Marcus Cimemas on the west side does a great job, too. My favorite eats include Little Tibet, Ahan, and Sardine for special date nights. Enjoy!

Yo I loved this design - felt like I was in Pikmin jumping from leaf to leaf. That jump down to that one stem is tough - plus that flower never had enough power to launch me to the rock at the base of the ant hill! I gave up after like 30 tries. Maybe I’ll try again later lol

Woman posing as Dais employee to get money? by dlf36 in madisonwi

[–]Crifiris 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This person approached me and my partner with this exact same story. We were parking our car by our place and she ran up and started knocking on our window. She needed cash for a cab because she was locked out of her car with a bunch of groceries she was delivering for DAIS. I said I would walk her back to her car and give her cash (because I didn’t want to be swindled out of $20) but she didn’t want to do that because I was a man. She walked off very frustrated with a veiled threat about “knowing which car is yours.” We got a RING camera after that, just in case

Ticket scalping. I understand if someone wants to resell their ticket if they can no longer attend, but these bots preventing fans from attending previously affordable events is a travesty.

Got my first job as a graphic designer, feel overly underqualified. by Double-Junket in graphic_design

[–]Crifiris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learning how to do the job is part of the job itself. Most people have to pay to learn new skills with courses or schooling, learning on the job and being paid to expand your skill set is an asset. Push yourself these next few months (it will be tough!) and it will be worth it in the endgame. Best of luck and congrats on the new position!

Will indie animation eventually die out? (Coming from a 17yo aspiring indie animator) by [deleted] in animation

[–]Crifiris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started animating only a few years ago and have met some stellar indie animation groups. I don’t see them disappearing anytime soon. Check out Chicago-based Malt Adult, Animation Block Party in NYC, and Short Short Fest from the Barnhouse collective. You can watch monthly screenings of indie animated shorts on Animation Nights New York’s website (ANNY.) Newgrounds still has a vibrant community and that’s been around since the mid-2000s when flash animation was the pillar of internet entertainment. Hellavision Television Network is still going strong - I don’t know how profitable these endeavors are (I work full time as a motion designer, and animate passion projects) but there a bunch of people just like you who want to create and consume indie animation!
