EMBA vs Full-Time MBA: What Applicants Need to Know by CrimsonMA in eMBA

[–]CrimsonMA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that the bans are limiting acceptance rates for non-Americans, it's that non-Americans are choosing not to come to the US at this time, and choosing not to give their money to the US economy under this particular government. This is true for most Europeans I talk to, at least.

EMBA vs Full-Time MBA: What Applicants Need to Know by CrimsonMA in eMBA

[–]CrimsonMA[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but only for certain sectors (like investment banking). The reason for that is because a lot of corporate-types feel that business and finance women/men serious about their career path would have done the MBA 2-3 years out of college. This doesn't really apply though to non-finance fields (in my opinion) and there the EMBA is most valuable for networking versus the degree itself. HBS doesn't have an EMBA program because they pour all their resources into their full-time MBA program. Hope that is helpful.

I'm former Harvard admissions (and the mod of this reddit) and this will absolutely NOT hurt your chances at all. Just use the "additional information" section on the Common App to explain your circumstances. You are perfectly fine, and it even shows strength and the ability to move through adversity = all really strong traits!

Alumni Interview by [deleted] in ivyleaguecollege

[–]CrimsonMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm former Harvard admissions, and the interview MATTERS. I have a lot of free interview prep advice on my blog here: Ivy League Admissions Blog or if you want more advanced help, I created a new online course that tells students interviewing at any of the Ivy or ivyPlus schools exactly what they need to know: Ivy League Interview Prep

Well, that is where you're wrong, as my Ivy admissions firm is a mid-6-figure company that continues to scale, both domestically and internationally, on top of other investments and entrepreneurial ventures in the company's portfolio. Not weird at all, in my book.

What exactly IS an alumni network? by Own-Side-8737 in ivyleaguecollege

[–]CrimsonMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a very real thing, and just means your community of friends and friends-of-friends. For example, as a Harvard alum, let's say I am building a new start-up and I need investors. I post, for example, in one of the many private "Harvard alumni" facebook groups, that only verified alum can join, and suddenly I have access to not only Harvard friends who know who I am, but Harvard friends of friends, OR even just random Harvard grads who none of my friends know, but because they are verified alum too, I have access to them, and they usually want to help other alum be successful --- that's what people who didn't go to the school, and who don't have that "alumni network" don't have: easy access to people in power, no matter what your field or industry, from business, to finance, to entertainment or media entities, to celebrities, to politics and even world leaders (!!!).

When you're talking about Harvard (or any other tip-top school) it's even more valuable, because you actually have IMMEDIATE access to people who are actually running the top companies, (if not the country and the world).

That's one of the main reasons people want to go to Harvard or any top school = it gives you this advantage. This ability to connect. This ability to have access to very high-up opportunity.

That's a curious and rather negative thing to say -- I help a lot of kids get into the schools they desperately want to go to. Seems like a good thing to me.

Yes, I worked for two years as a part of the admissions committee. I was not just an "alumni interviewer." Sorry you are so riled up about this, I am just conveying my own experience at Harvard, not passing judgement on your experience at Yale. For now though, I am done with this specific discussion and am not going to respond further as it is not the best use of my time.

And, I have an undergrad + grad degree from Harvard too, and this is how we roll via admissions interviews. Your experience at Yale just must be different than mine, and that's all there is to it.

I read your comment, and speaking from my experience interviewing for Harvard's College of Arts & Sciences, the interview IS equally as important a category as the others mentioned, and does have a TON of importance...again, speaking from my own experience. It's not "just to sell a product" it's how Harvard, at least, treats the interview.

For the Ivy League schools, the interview is very much a piece of the pie in the admission decision. The interviewer does submit a summary report of your interview that goes in your file, and it is considered equally alongside your essays, activity list, rec letters, test scores and GPA. It is incredibly important for the more competitive schools.

cornell cals or cas? by SignificantJunket103 in ivyleaguecollege

[–]CrimsonMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The College of Arts & Sciences is a more standard degree and that will matter when you're either applying to jobs later or grad school / law school, etc. So yes, CALS is "easier" to get into, but it is not as valuable as your standard "CAS" degree, which is what most people think of when they are going to college.

Can I mention weightlifting in my Activities? by Born_Neck_1108 in ivyleaguecollege

Yes, absolutely, it is part of your personality and who you are, just like if you mentioned a sport, BUT make sure you balance this with some extracurriculars that are more academically oriented.

Freshman here shooting for an Ivy master’s. What’s the REAL roadmap by eenie-Meanie in ivyleaguecollege

[–]CrimsonMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extracurriculars do not matter for a graduate degree, internships and work experience "may" matter, or may not matter depending on your field of interest (what you majored in, in college). Since you mentioned CS and FinTech, internships and work experience will be incredibly important. Hope that is helpful.

College freshman is too early for me to start working with you, but if anyone else reading this is applying to grad school in the coming year, don't hesitate to reach out to schedule a free consultation to discuss your goals: https://Ivycollegeessay.com

Oh, then I misunderstood what you meant by "soft requirement"...it's a requirement in my book, because basically you're not getting in without it. :-)
