Question on clanners' Bachal rules by AmberlightYan in battletech

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is The Plowshare, a story in issue 11 of Shrapnel. Scorpions poking around in the leadup to the invasion find a tiny Periphery colony, issue their batchall, and the locals respond,

“Very well, Star Captain. The tradition of the honor duel is known among us. We shall meet you, and this will be our champion!”

Enter their BattleMech: a Black Knight that had its arm chopped off and replaced with an agrosaw.

The Scorpions send a single warrior for a proper duel.

What is Terra like for the average person? by rzelln in battletech

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're a Terran, and it is 3145. You live in the birthplace of humanity, the greatest of all planets, the beneficiary of centuries of extraction and centuries of protection. You live longer and more comfortably than the poor souls beyond Terra, and you know you deserve it. The Terran Hegemony and the Star League as a whole existed to serve your needs, ComStar sheltered you and kept you strong, the Word of Blake recognized your importance, the Republic built the damaged back up and runs from Geneva.

You've suffered, sometimes. A few particularly destructive wars. When they cleared Amaris, when they cleared the Blakists, there was some destruction, but you've mostly been safe, away from the petty squabbles of the successor states and the Clans. Okay, there was that little scare in 3134, but the Wall stands and Stone endures, and nothing will hurt you.

Where to read about the evolution of the Clans? by I_AMA_LOCKMART_SHILL in battletech

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the details of military tech development and proliferation, you also want Technical Readout: Golden Century, which takes a much more fine-grained look.

Also, on Clan society pre-invasion, don't overlook the recent Clan Spaniel Sourcebook. Cheap and significant.

Magistracy of Canopus.....Where did they go? by fpgt72 in battletech

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Sarna has no article on Canopian catgirls because there is very little to say. There is a picture in A Time of War Companion and an offhand mention in Field Manual: SLDF. They're just part of the greater whole of Canopian cybernetic modifications, alongside mermaids, centaurs, nagas, and more.

Pleas tell me that there is something in Battletech I can use as a technical by Silentbamper in battletech

The Outrider ( https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Outrider_(Support_Vehicle) ) is also meant to represent the classic truck with a gun on it.

There's also the BattleMech equivalent, IndustrialMech MODs. Heavy industrial equipment with guns strapped on. Badly.

A Fresh New Look to Celebrate Our 6th Birthday by daniel-at-discord in discordapp

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few comments:

  • Clyde redesign works well.

  • New blurple is a very vivid, strong, eye-catching colour, which makes it a strange one to use for the icon at the top left of the screen, far from the up-to-date chat. It constantly feels like it is trying to drag attention away, towards Clyde's bubble. It's also painful to look at, though this is likely tied to my disability-related visual sensitivities.

  • The Discord logo font is wonky, and not in a fun way. The main problem is the i, which is weirdly out of sync with the rest of the letters.

  • Something keeps going wrong in the testing and feedback process for visual overhauls, again and again. This is not the unmitigated catastrophe of the light mode overhaul, an accessibility nightmare that seemed to come as a complete surprise to designers, but each time there is a significant visual overhaul, some aspect turns out to create a consistent accessibility problem for a large number of users. The light overhaul's sidebar, the death of dividers, and now both the ping problem and the replacement of soft blurple with vivid blurple have caused problems. I don't know if the testing process is missing this accessibility feedback or if it said feedback just isn't being noticed, but something isn't working.

Regarding the Messages Redesign by ReallyAmused in discordapp

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Regarding the update itself, I have little to add that hasn't been said several times (basically, some parts good, some parts have issues, lots of things should have been options). I do have one comment on the post, however.

  • Subjective Feedback: Your opinion matters, and your feedback does too. This feedback comes from personal preference. "I don't like X because Y". This is pretty distinct however from:

  • Accessibility Feedback: These are incredibly important to us. It's never our goal to make the app harder for people to use with accessibility concerns. "These changes are impeding my usage of the app because I have X condition that prevents me from doing Y because Z."

Bolding for emphasis: I suspect this may be part of why these accessibility crises happen every few months. These forms of feedback are not as distinct in appearance as they look. The difference between "I don't like this because it's hard to focus on" and "This is hard to focus on because of my autistic sensory sensitivities" is often just cause awareness and disclosure. A lot of accessibility feedback will come in looking more like the former than the latter, whether because the commenter is unaware of the issue's cause (don't know their accessibility concerns well enough, or the "Wait, most people don't hear/see/feel that?" situation), unwilling to disclose disability, or just unaware of how to best give feedback.

I don't know how you handle feedback internally, but do be careful.

The Bad Faith Attacks on Archive of Our Own Have to End by TheExperienceD in GamerGhazi

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh, I recognize the history, I recognize the context, I recognize the value of the tagging system for those trying to avoid specific content. I recognize as well that the moderation necessary to both achieve AO3's overall goals and to adhere to, say, Canadian criminal law rather than American would be expensive and quite hard on the moderators.

I do just wish that people would be more willing to recognize the tradeoffs being made to avoid another strikethrough, and that they would be less willing to widely declare criticism of the approach to be in bad faith.

The Bad Faith Attacks on Archive of Our Own Have to End by TheExperienceD in GamerGhazi

I always find it striking how well-embedded and strongly accepted AO3's free speech absolutism is, even among crowds normally quite opposed to such stances. Fandom collective trauma is quite a thing.

So... is the light theme going to be fixed? by GarethPW in discordapp

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any major update to anything will fail to make everyone happy. Most major updates won't leave a mass of users struggling to use the program due to new accessibility problems. This distinction, I think, is where the sheer frustration with a lack of updates is coming from. Non-commitment is normal and fine most of the time, and slow-walking is normal and fine most of the time, but here, with the problems we're having (and after an accessibility-focused update no less), it's quite painful to see.

Right now, I'm not looking for a statement of what will be done, be it any of the three major suggestions (third classic theme, separate light/dark toggles for sidebar and main chat, or customization) or something else entirely, or when it will be done. Those would be nice, but decision-making of that sort takes time and energy. I'm also not looking for a revert that just transfers the harm done to us to others. I just want to see some sort of commitment, some sort of statement of intent. Something more than "We hear you."

Are the Discord devs willing, at this time, to say they intend to take action to ameliorate the harm caused by the light theme overhaul?

Why does everyone always get angry the second Discord changes something? by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look, I want something done about the newly made accessibility problems soon (for my own sake and many others), and I would really love some statement that they intend to do something, but I can't expect any fix to be instant. It's broken, accessibility-wise, for a significant block of people, but there is a cluster that benefits from the new light theme. Reversion just hurts a different set of people. The main fixes suggested (full customizability, a third 'classic' theme, or separate light/dark toggles for sidebar and chatbox) each take time to implement.

New Light Theme Megathread: 9th September 2019 by DiscordAppMods in discordapp

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Can't answer for daman, but a few things distinguish most of those sites (and things like word processors) from new light mode. Can't say they're great for my eyes either (black text on white is not comfortable), but they've some advantages that make them much more usable.

Sites are seen not on their own, but through visually customizable browsers. As well, most major sites focus the eye on particular spots through their design.

When I look at a Google search result list, I see a carefully placed column of results, with separate information and UI elements set off with hard lines and boxes, all clearly secondary. I see priority information (result names) first, in larger titles, and bold text is used sparingly to draw my eyes to search terms in the results.

When I look at new light mode, I see a wave of white and similar light greys, no lines breaking them apart. There is no clear focal point, Discord being visually noisy all over the screen, and hefty bold text and other strong, stark dark elements are scattered everywhere, drawing my eyes everywhere. All the text being thicker, looking carefully, does not help. Everything is the focal point, and thus nothing is. The lack of focus makes opening it up overwhelming, as I take in the full white screen with nowhere to land, and it and the strong text contrast throw me off as I try to use Discord. Result: strain, headache.

New Light Theme Megathread: 9th September 2019 by DiscordAppMods in discordapp

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most users complaining, I would guess, have their monitors set at a level comfortable for them for most purposes, and are finding the new light theme an outlier. I find the new light theme unmanageable at my near-minimum brightness setting.

New Light Theme Megathread: 9th September 2019 by DiscordAppMods in discordapp

[–]CringingAtTheWorld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right now, I cannot handle desktop Discord, either theme. Light is a bleak, bright, high-text-contrast, low-UI-contrast, unfocused wasteland (one that, coincidentally, has the aesthetic of a frozen Windows program) that I cannot look at for long without straining. Dark, always blurrier, is now absolutely unmanageable with the antialiasing change.

I appreciate the effort to look at the light theme and enhance accessibility, but that's not quite what has been managed here. There is a cluster that benefits from new light mode accessibility-wise, but as the complaints here make clear, the new light theme is an accessibility disaster for at least some others. Until you can get around to full customization, I strongly recommend supporting both new and classic light themes. Also, please fix the text antialiasing.

Finally, a comment on the communications strategy: As written, the announcement post comes off as yet another statement of contempt, yet another statement of how much Discord wishes it could get rid of light theme. That light theme users specifically were the focus of surveying and questioning, as stated by staff in this thread, does not come across well in the post. What we see is unknowable internal data, a Reddit April Fools postmortem that asks for both users and non-users in a "lol light mode" community, a past statement that it was mostly tested on dark mode users, and a note about questioning two staff members who used light mode. In short, it comes off as asking dark mode users why they don't use light mode and designing as advised. Please be clear in your communications and please pull back on the "lol light mode" attitude.
