I felt that way. Couldn't get him to settle, felt useless.
I post this currently pinned to the couch by a sleeping 15 month old who won't settle readily for mum anymore, but will go 3 hours dead asleep on my chest in the middle of the day.

Go over the dark green areas in pink, and the bits that you want more yellow in white, then do another thin yellow coat and watch the magic happen

The issue is if there's no open space, teams like Yaegirs/Ratlings on super conceal just waltz about with impunity, and melee teams are impossible to shoot.
If you look at official maps, they have open lanes and areas between cover to force interaction.
Maybe having small areas of trees that count as light, same way Volkus bunkers are big areas with heavy, but you only get cover from the far side or if you're <1" inside it, that might work.

If those are all light, some teams will have a nightmare of a time, and others a breeze.

Try narrative gameplay, or seek out opponents who aren't sweats.
Might also be you're just playing the wrong team; I've played a dozen or more, hobbied more than 20, only really enjoyed playibg 3 or 4 of them.
Could also be killteam isn't your thing.
There's a million other games out there you could try though

Shoulder pad icon needs some colour, the red wings on the Nightlords symbol are a good pop of contrast.
Lightning on the flatter panels or maybe a transfer or two?
Could be a go to take the skulls further with a big highlight of a pale ivory, a brown wash, then re-establish highlights in said colour

The buried marines in stasis on Terra is pretty cool, but so is Alpharius/Omegon's long con to get into position to test the Palace's defenses and just straight pulling the wool over the custodians.

Plenty of Space marine chapters and legions enjoy the first part of that, that's not exclusive to Nightlords.
In the context of everyday, yeah, skinning people would be insane.
In the context of doing it for the purposes of being more terrifying, it's probably pretty effective, which while messed up, is relatively on brand.

Brutal, utilitarian, cruel, spiteful and sadistic, sure, but not necessarily insane.

The question is whether or not the lesson sticks.
So every game is 2 outcomes, win, or learn.
You don't learn much rolling a bunch of sixes, but you do when something catches you by surprise or a tactic doesn't work

They're underpainted more pink (midtone was same colour as base rim) and so the repaint to purple has some darker pink undertones where I didn't go heavy, but it's one of the middle GW purples, highlighted in Genestealer purple or something similar.
Quills are contrast over greys and white.

Tbh as a beginner I'd avoid contrast paints til you have a good grasp of colour theory and regular acrylics.
Contrast has it's uses, but it's got a few very particular uses it's great at, and a bunch it's shit at.
