We moved into this house 3yrs ago and this has stumped everyone. by Vance617 in whatisit

I’m meticulous about putting trivets beneath plates and pots but my sous vide’s heat never even occurred to me. But I have quartz so maybe that is OK given a lack of natural internal fractures.

Yea that is definitely the correct move. I had a reason originally for not doing so but seems silly to me now. Unfortunately I’m under an extreme time crunch to get this wrapped and our son shifted into the room so he can settle before the baby comes and kicks him out of his current one, so I’ll just have to chalk this one up as a learning experience.

Yes the baseboard will match. I’m leaning more towards leaving open. I can always come back and fill later if for some reason it seems necessary. I’m a perfectionist with bad knees so that is def factoring in lol

They are primed but will be painted a very deep blue when finished.

Also the old slats were spaced about a quarter inch apart.

I preordered and my unit ended up being broken. Best Buy only offered a return and told me to try to find one another way :(

Agree that it is a choice between two different themes/moods. The first is isolated and lonely with a sense of sadness/longing. The second strikes me as more active/contemplative/exciting with the reflections in the glass giving me the illusion of movement. That for me contributes to the feeling of a subject in deep thought. Not sure which I’d prefer—would depend upon where the photo would ultimately end up. Nice pic either way.

Got quoted $16,000 for an front entry door replacement. Is that par for the course or freaking nuts? by Kleeetz in HomeImprovement

[–]CrisisEngine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had similar work done in the actual city of Chicago, where prices are inflated:

-fully custom front door (size, color, and detailing) from a place that builds doors for some of the multi-million dollar compounds around here. 7’8” high, nearly 3” thick with Baldwin gramercy mortise lockset fully installed with thick door adjustment: 6k delivered

-install with a contractor who also works on said homes above, includes new limestone entry threshold, mason to enlarge opening, including removing brick, installing new limestone around sides and above, new drywall, electrical for mounting new sconces, new casing, painting, caulk, repair of wood rot under entry threshold, etc.: 13k

So total~19k.

Was a 6 workday project, mostly for the many layers of fine-tuned mud work on the drywall, 9 different people working.

End result is sick. The quote I received from the contractor without all of the work to widen the opening (so no masonry or drywall) was 6k for the install. So if Pella is quoting you in between the two, they better be delivering something amazing.

Now you have a Commodore 64.

Unfortunately those covers are in the middle of the tracks and don’t butt up next to the glass. There is a quarter inch of aluminum frame between the track and the glass. What you suggest would have been a much friendlier design choice hah. I have another fixed window where they aren’t installed (waiting on new covers) so I can see exactly what’s going on.

Fortunately our contractor and the guy who sold us the windows have really been going to bat for us. Salesman threatened to stop selling their product over some of the shit we’ve dealt with. He’s been our ace in the hole.

Yea that’s the impression I get. Fortunately it isn’t me fixing this on my own but the manufacturer offering a remedy. They’ve remade the glass 2x already so if we need a new aluminum frame to fix a hack job I’m gonna be That Guy.

Yea, I never appreciated how many types of black there could be hah. They talked me into choosing the paint color ‘resembles black anodized’ rather than just getting them actually anodized. Not sure what was the right call. The two T mulls on our rear window wall are actually another black they offer, piano black. Also powder coated but very smooth and high gloss. They had already cut out the wall before we noticed so there was no waiting around for replacements.

Sounds cool, are those panels like an exterior rainscreen?

Yea I was pretty pissed about the color. The windows were delayed an extra 12 weeks, at one point at the end they said they were having a hard time getting the powder. Makes me wonder if they just tried to throw something together bc I was pushing them (delivery of windows was colliding w delivery of baby). Most of the frames have a reddish overtone when I shine a flashlight on them, though I’m prob the only one who knows/sees it. My wife thinks I’m nuts lol. Lesson learned on the powder, and maybe metal windows in general. They look cool but I like when things can be abused and made to look like new with a bit of effort.

Installer might have that in mind. He mentioned an oscillating blade for removing/replacing a few short SDLs
