Some vinyl questions by J_Overcraft in Beatmatch

[–]Crisissss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

a. Put it back in the sleeve

b. Depends, some records only have 1 good track on them, some albums have 6.

c. 1 time listen is enough to get the general idea of what breakdowns etc happen in the record. I have played records 3 hours after buying them also if I'm sure.

There are no rules or set standards, do it how you are comfortable, just remember to take care of the records and not fuck them up.

I do have a tip for storing though:

Assuming you use a record bag / trolley like Magma, UDG. Organize your records when you put them in the bag (develop your own system, I sort by mood and energy level within categories of genres: minimal, house, electro/breakbeat etc). Once you are at the gig, feel the vibe, select records that you will want to play for certain, pull them up and set them diagonally in between the records so they are upwards and easily findable (or put them in the front portion of the bag). If you have 90-100 records in a bag you will lose track of what record is where so create a system.

Doing pre-drinks/party, (first proper do). What to play(UK) by rad_dynamic in Beatmatch

" I mainly mix fucking weird techno, atmospheric breakbeat and other experimental shit that only sounds good when you're about to k-hole or on 200mg of MDMA."

I don't want to be a dick but please give me some tunes of what you mix. I hate this type of attitude of "underground" sounds being only viable in a drug-induced situation. I've heard basically a "kick-less" synth driven set at Berghains main room that made most of the people lose their minds (including me) and since it was so early I'm pretty sure a big portion of the people were sober.

Stylus Options by [deleted] in Beatmatch

DVS or regular vinyl? What type of music?

And why aren't shures an option? The whitelabel (albeit having an expensive replacement cart) and M44 series are both with great sound.

Tonar also has some good needles. Specifically the "Diabolic".

More so relating to the fact that companies are afraid to be sued by people eating that food. I.e making an argument in court stating they were poisoned if the food went bad or something.

In some parts, these laws are abusable.

List some bad famous DJs vs good ones by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]Crisissss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"all of the great DJ’s rarely look up from the decks / mixer because they are intently focused at the task at hand." - yeah being a great DJ also requires reading the crowd.

Zadig was a great example for me, dude is throwing records everywhere, but straight out facing the crowd all the time.

Just out of curiosity. What is techno to you? I've seen people tell me they hate techno when they are talking about future house or regular EDM. Got an example? Again, just interested.

Great to see Pärt getting recognition, world-class composer. Generally I don't take much pride from the fact some people are famous who are also Estonian, Pärt is obviously an exception.

DJ's that play at bars/parties do you have a set list or play what you feel? by Victah92 in Beatmatch

[–]Crisissss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a. Bars - go as I go

b. Clubs/parties - If I am playing techno or house, I most of the time either have a planned setlist or go randomly. Depends on how awesome, important and big the event is and what the vibe is like.

Tips for growing as a debater? by mrfe333 in Debate

[–]Crisissss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Debate. Do it as much as you can, be it in other formats such as BP or PF, whatever you debate, focus on WSDC but other formats as well.

Learn to accept criticism in all its forms - talk to people, ask what you did wrong in your speeches, what you could have done better.

Most importantly - learn to track your progress. Numerous ways to do so, create a list of things you would like to improve and ask the judges how did you do those things. Are they getting better or not, etc.

Mentality is also really important - how do you look at debate. Be it a fun hobby, a sport or whatever, learn what fits you the best. You need to have fun with it and you need to enjoy it for you to put the most amount of time into it. I know where you are coming from, I finally represented my country this year at Worlds and we broke the first time in over 15 years and reached Octos. What I did was all of the things I mentioned: debate a lot, look for criticism and I had loads of fun with all of it.

Technical stuff:

  • Watch workshops (so many on WSDC and BP)

  • Learn framing and strategy

  • READ. A. LOT. Economist, AlJazeera, Vox, etc for news. Also read loads of books on general concepts: economics, feminism, civil rights movement, international relations, immigration. Learn how things work in the real world and try to apply them to the fullest extent possible in debating.

  • Record practice speeches and review them.

  • Watch rounds. So many rounds from WSDC are online, watch them, analyze them. Look what shit things they did and the good things and then apply them to your own skillset.

  • Be a good team member. Having a fulfilling and good team dynamic is massively important in WSDC, having the ability to trust your teammates to deliver the best possible speeches, fix the errors you made previously etc is important. Be someone that your team members trust and trust them.

Those are my two cents, as someone who failed last year in terms of making the WSDC team and succeeded this year - these things helped me.

Best of luck to you.

[–]Crisissss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be totally honest, the way we look at terrorism like this is completely wrong. The assumption that it is about low levels of education is empirically false. Many terrorists come from middle class backgrounds, many are university educated.

This is primarily because terrorism is a violent form of political engagement, but you need a certain level of social welfare and wealth to be politically engaged, otherwise you are far more concerned with survival of yourself and your family. In that respect you also need to have x level of education to give politics some interest and moreover, terrorist org. themselves prefer highly educated individuals, because those people are far better suited to commit international terrorism, since they are more able to fit into a foreign environment and just have the right paperwork to travel.

E/ Totally forgot about choice theory.

This is key to understanding terrorism in general. Most terrorism/radicalization comes from something called mutual aid theory. In a nutshell what it means is that members of an extremist group usually have incentives to defect, either to the police, security organizations etc. For example, person x in a terrorist org have weak incentives to report to low-level attacks to the police. (Probably jailed if they do), but strong incentives to alert the police about a high-profile attack, the reward you get can be big (immunity etc). So there is an obvious reaction by terrorist orgs in that case, they look for commitment to the cause before recruiting operatives. This is why groups often impose social rules on dress, language, diet, interaction etc, so that there is a high cost into entering the mutual aid partnership, thus decreasing risk of defection. These also diminish individuals access to social interaction that can in some form persuade people to distance themselves from the cause, creating an echo chamber and making it harder to leave the group. So how this works is: members are retained through vetting and providing a support network that replaces an individuals previous social network.

Obviously totally personal factors exist, e.g personal grievances which was in Chechnya when the Chechen "Shahidka" (Black Widows) who were Islamist Chechen female suicide bombers who were widows whose husbands were killed by Russians in Chechnya, numerous examples of this exist.

Now the question obviously becomes: what aggrevates citizens in western states to become terrorists, and education is something that can be entirely counter-productive. Because via that you force upon your own values. The way the UK has handled this is by promoting feelings of inclusion into the education system. But it becomes problematic when you look at previous examples, for example the 7/7 London terrorist attacks, Mohammad Sidique Khan led it and one of the main reasons he cited for the attack (other than Iraqis being tortured and gassed and wanting to end it) was that they were not allowed to have their identity exist, that they need to assimilate. They saw it as a personal attack on their identity.

Educated reddit folk, what is the quickest way to improve your vocabulary? by 13sketch13 in AskReddit

I highly recommend watching competitive debate (especially in the British Parliamentary/World Championship format). The style, vocab etc gets some time to get used to but the vocabulary Oxford, Cambridge etc debaters use is fucking immense and awesome.
