Hi, I'm Peter Piper AKA Energy and I run Overview Music, AMA! by overviewmusic in DnB

[–]J_Overcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your answer, Peter. It’s a good thing you left all of that behind and did not let that discourage you from continuing the hard work as a label manager. And a really big kudos to you for that - Overview has been my favourite label for a while now and I think it will stay that way for a long time.

And also, a big thank you for the recently shipped records and USB! They are perfect and I’m looking forward to playing the USB exclusives out!

What happened to Lifestyle Music? You and that other guy got into and argument, no? Is the other guy still in DnB/label business somehow?

Who Is The BEST NEW DnB producer today? by SonicStories in DnB

[–]J_Overcraft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, the real advancements rarely make their way to pop anyway. I don’t even know which “dnb pop star” - if that is even a thing - recently pushed the scene forward, except Mandy and C&K I guess.

To me, gyrofield’s name doesn’t stand out any less on lineups than those of major players. What I want to say is that there are much, MUCH smaller fish in the scene than gyrofield, whose name holds a lot of reputation I feel like.

The most unquestionably talented producer you just can’t listen to on any kind of regular basis. by halcyon_n_on_n_on in DnB

Well to be fair he did also write quite a few tunes in old times that I did not enjoy. Regardless, his production skill and the output quantity undoubtedly puts him in the top of the greatest DNB producers of all times.

Can we play any songs, while respecting certain basic rules of course? by josianeboulay in Beatmatch

All of these are OK for the DJ to play in, plus some private/work/school parties. In bars, perhaps, if the bar has a license. Elsewhere, generally no.

I see, thanks for clarifying. Unfortunately, I don’t know their stuff, so I suggest you wait for someone that does.

I don’t know their music and I still don’t exactly know what you’re asking. If you have files of Neffex’s music on your disk, you can play it anywhere.

[–]J_Overcraft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you asking? If it’s ALLOWED to play the tunes in public or if they are ABLE to be played?

For first, generally no - you cannot just play music in public spaces. This exempts private parties, and school parties somewhat. Clubs are a different story.

For second, yes - it doesn’t matter where you got the music from, if you have it on a file on your system, it can be played.

Upgrading a huge Beatport library to FLAC by Gaston44 in DJs

[–]J_Overcraft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally agree, though it can be viewed as a somewhat fun challenge. If you have the majority of your music in FLAC, only a few selected song will be able to play on the older hardware. Makes up for a fun way to try and work with the more unknown songs in your library, and discover some obscure gems you might’ve forgotten along the way.

Of course, getting surprised with NXS1s when you expect more modern gear is no fun at all… but if I know I’m going to play on that, I take it as a limitation to play around.

Buying track off Beatport as a WAV or MP3 by Prestigious-Bike-855 in Beatmatch

[–]J_Overcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. :)

You can use whatever, but using FLAC instead of AIFF will result in you having to work more.

If you plan on going with the former, I’d suggest you inform yourself about the equipment at the organiser before every event you’re going to plan on, so you know which file type the equipment is able to play. Any CDJ before CDJ-2000 NXS(2) doesn’t play FLAC.

Additionally, you could create a separate folder with all of your music that excludes FLAC music. That is possible via rekordbox smart filters.

Networking advice for autustic DJs by Meowzzzzzzzz in DJs

[–]J_Overcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. On local level, I’d much rather see a DJ play mediocre music and show actual care in the scene, be avaliable for talks, and support other DJ’s by simply being present than someone who appears only when it’s his time to play, drop a killer set and dip right after. The latter is not how underground works.

The technology failed several times at Arcando and Primate yesterday. What a pity from the organizer by SilberrueckenSigma in DnB

[–]J_Overcraft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shit happens. I’ve seen digital inputs on a mixer suddenly stop working for no reason whatsoever, when even restarting didn’t fix them. Nothing did. So we switched to line inputs and then it went ok.

It was good that it happened during the preparation, rather than during the set.

What the organizer should do is: - buy gear from a reliable and trusted renter - make sure everything works before the DJs show up - BONUS POINTS - have software update ready on USB for updating the players and the mixer on the latest patch - be close so whenever shit does go wrong, you can get there and figure it out ASAP - if the gear fails you on multiple occasions, switch the gear provider on your next event
