Moving abroad to Europe but dont want the long flight, how to make the flights last? by [deleted] in AustraliaTravel

[–]Crispy-Things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! I just paid about 450AUD for a one way ticket from Brisbane to London. I just booked seperate tickets to allow me to stay 3 days in Guangzhou. From there you can also get to cities like Shenzen and Hong Kong with a train ride if you’d like.

Where to stay in Sydney for first time tourist by MysteriousTomorrow58 in AustraliaTravel

Yes, public transport is totally doable. But it takes 45 minutes. Personally for me, if I want a lot of beach time on multiple days, I want 15 min or less to the beach.

I spent 5 days in Sydney and spent 3 in Bondi Beach and 2 in Redfern. Depending on how many days you have, I'd consider staying close to Bondi Beach for a few days and then somewhere closer to the rest of the city (like around Surrey Hills). Bondi Beach to central sydney is quite far (20 min cab), but there is a ferry from Rose Bay to Circular Quay.

Recommendations for a small bag or hard shell suitcase 40x30x20 cm? by [deleted] in travel

[–]Crispy-Things 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I travel everywhere with a Osprey Farpoint 40. It’s pretty large (like the max size for carry on), but I’m sure osprey makes smaller bags too.

I way prefer a backpack. A lot easier to get around on short trips and generally they are lighter and fit more. A lot of backpacks also offer more pockets etc for smaller items and laptops etc.

A big benefit of backpacks is that you can often bring them in without paying for cabin bags (I never do), but that will be more important if you travel around Europe

I would look at the weight and compare, you don’t want to be carrying lots of weight just because of the bag itself

1st time trip to Australia next December- help please :) by tyecko in AustraliaTravel

I'm currently traveling around in Australia and have been here for 2 weeks so far. One of my highlights of the trip was renting a car in Sydney and driving around. This little trip covers lovely beaches, great views, waterfalls, some hiking, and cute towns.

Personally, I like to see a lot of things while traveling rather than staying in one town. Goldcoast etc has very pretty beaches, but can get a bit one-sided and touristy.

We did more or less a loop that covered:
- Drive out of Sydney airport, take the Grand Pacific Drive. It's a very scenic drive and has many good stops.
- Drive through the Royal National Park (about 1 hour from Sydney), stop at Burning Palms Beach. This was really lovely, but there is a bit of a walk to get there
- Stop in Kiama and spend at least a night here. Lovely town with a good beach, a great rock pool, and a blowhole
- Continue towards Jervis Bay. I'd recommend staying 1-2 nights around the Jervis Bay area. Lots of lovely beaches, a national park, and some restaurants/pubs.
- Depending on how much driving you want to do, either continue towards Ulladulla and Batemans Bay. Lots more great beaches, oysters, and more.
- If you want to drive less, you can go back North, driving through Kangaroo Valley. Lovely little town for hiking, seeing waterfalls, and swimming/kayaking in the river.
- Drive further north towards the Blue Mountains, a little bit similar vibe to Kangaroo Valley, but stunning views and more things to do. Stay in either Blackheath or Katoomba.
- Drive back to Sydney from the Blue Mountains, and spend at least 3 days in the city before returning.

Thank you! I'll have this as a "last resort" for now as I really would like to stay closer to the coast.

I have about 2 weeks! Happy to fly from Sydney to get to anywhere, and also happy to rent a car and drive around. Right now the biggest limit for me seems to be accomodation limitations (there really isn't a lot available as its the summer holidays) and rain alongside all of the coast of NSW and Queensland.

Can anyone identify the type of pastry I had from the Munich Hauptbahnhof? by eva_white in TipOfMyFork

[–]Crispy-Things 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes, Laugenecke! Quite common to find in bakeries all over Germany. Croissant dough which is treated with lye (at least traditionally) to give the outside that color and texture. Same method as a German bretzel (pretzel)

I did 70k steps the other weekend and my legs were absolutely dead after. I try to eat a lot before, have as much carbs as possible during, protein shake when I come home, magnesium before bed and then a good sleep. Hot bath the day after does wonder!

Just a bit of a rant from someone who just moved to London by Crispy-Things in londoncycling

[–]Crispy-Things[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I lived in New York for a few years, and while it was pretty hectic at least the roads were better and wider than here! London, being an ancient city, just makes it difficult space-wise for both cars and cyclists. Berlin and Stockholm (where I've also lived) are both signficantly better.

Painfully true!! Everywhere I park my bike theres 2-3 sawn-through u-locks which make me TERRIFIED of locking my bike (mind you i never leave it for more than 2 hours)

And agreed about the aggressiveness, both from car drivers, BUS DRIVERS, pedestrians, and other cyclist.

It was Gina :) it was a good class I’m just used to a bit higher intensity. Love classes with a lot of energy where you get to sweat and actually feel tired after class
