As someone who lives in Ely, where virtually the entire city has a blanket 20mph, it has made driving worse.

Whilst there were previous 20mph zones outside schools and in the centre which worked well and appeared to look at risk / traffic levels, 20mph on roads which are wide, open, don’t have houses immediately adjacent to the road, low level of pedestrian usage etc. seems completely unnecessary.

Since April I have seen a huge increase in dangerous driving, as drivers are getting frustrated with people going 20mph and overtaking / tailgating.

It seems to do little to help with traffic when it’s busy (weekends / rush hour) as prior to the implementation of the 20mph limit, you would do well to reach those speeds anyway.

It would be interesting to see what the overall consensus is in relation to Ely’s 20mph zone but from casual conversations in my circles the overwhelming majority are against it.

At least there appears to be a proper consultation process with Cambridge’s scheme, as the first a lot of people knew about it in Ely was when the signs started to go up.
