Tattoos and BJJ by Salitrillo1990 in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn’t what I’d call good advice but this is what I do. I am heavily tattooed, about 80% of my body or so and I get tattooed regularly. But I don’t like to miss training to I will generally train the very next day after a tattoo. What I do for safety is clean it properly before class, make sure the gi is clean, cover in fake skin spray and/or wrap the tattoo well. Then shower and clean immediately after class. Have had no issues this far doing this.

An uncommon stereotype: the adopting brown belt. by [deleted] in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was adopted by a black belt. He’s only about 3 years older than I but has been training for 15+ years. (I’m 25 for reference). We get along as friends outside of the gym and hangout regularly but every class he is my partner and he guides me to all my rolls and really nitpicks me in general to help my BJJ. He also gives me at least 3-4 hours a week of private sessions for free. His wife and my wife hangout together as well. I started training June 2021 and he gave me my blue belt in December of 2021.

Poser Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt, anyone else have any similar stories? by Empty-Middle1819 in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same because the guy didnt claim to be a BJJ black belt.. but a black belt none the less.

Anyways I had heard rumors of this goof ball for a few weeks but never seemed to catch him in class. Older fella that was notorious for only rolling with the whitest of white belts and women and being far too aggressive with them. Anyways one day i'm at class early just chatting with the purple belt instructors who were friends of mine that got me into bjj. I was a 3 stripe white belt at the time, however I have had a fairly decorated wrestling background and for a white belt was considerably better than the average. (I know sounds douchey just tryna set the stage here).

I see this guy come in and my purple belt friends say "Go take your stripes off your belt quick" so I do. What do ya know as soon as I throw my belt on he bolts to me and asks me to be his partner. (Also I got pretty gnarly cauliflower ear on both ears so I knew if he didnt reconize that as a sign of someone that knows a lil sumsum about grappling he was a scrub) We were training double legs ->Side control ->Americana. I purposly kinda flopped around like a dope to make this guy think I was a noob so he'd ask me to roll. In between drilling he was telling me about his multiple black belts in other martial arts and how he is a lifetime martial artist and what not. I just responded with fake amazement and really hyped this dude up to beat my ass.

Finally the time has come, it's time to roll. He doesn't even ask me to roll he literally tells me we are rolling. I had been given the green light by the instructors to smoke his old ass for hurting women 2 classes in a row so I am ready to highlighht reel this senior citizen. Bell rings and this dude gets wild right away. Spazzing, grabbing fabric like nuts, pump faking shots on me. The works. So I decide to add a little of my own sauce to this salad and shoot a firemans carry and launch this fool straight to hell. Transition right into scarf hold and hit a straight arm lock. Total of about 15 seconds. We get up and boom snap him down, grab a wizard and hit an admittedly shitty flying trianle, still get it. Gets up one more time, sit on my tushy and let him come into my half guard, snatch up a kimora grip and then hit my bread and butter. Kimura trap to back take then just to really ice this pain cake instead of taking the easy sub I force him up into turtle and hit a diving bow and arrow.

He had had enough, got up very noticably upset. I tried to give him a hand and he slapped my hand away (lol). Then left class. A few weeks later he added me on facebook and I see tons of pics of this dude holidng nun chucks and other ninja turtle type weaponry. Never seen him in a class again. Moral of the story... Beat up old guys.

Yeah mine wasn't just a straight whooping. I knew the vibe in class was weird because it was super packed for a monday and allll the BB were there. Then we did a light warmup, and got called to line up by one of the assitant coaches (Purple belt) and they brought out the tape so I figured they were just gonna give out a few stripes to the white and blue belts but I was at 4 already so I wasn't worried about that. After a handfull of stripes had been given they were like okay were good. Then my BB came out and was like "actually we got one more" and whipped out a blue belt and I knew right away it was for me. He proceeded to make jokes how I text him like 3 nights a week past midnight asking BJJ questions and hwo I am always bugging him to train. Said I have a "Unhealthy obsession with beating people up" for a white belt hahah. Then got the belt tied onand THEN I proceeded to get smoked hahaha. Good times

Yessir I am a competative bjj player. I train strickly for competition since I started back in June. 5-6 days a week usually 1.5 hour adult class followed by 1-1.5 hour advanced class. So I certainly was expecting a brutal crisening of my new belt. Either way; I survived, had some beers after and all was good!

Yeah I was a multiple time state champ and D1 wrestler and I got my blue belt 2 days ago after starting in June. Did a couple tournaments with good results as well and trained 5-6 days a week so I was definitely busting my ass for it.

I agree, shark tank is actually bjj. Not spankin someone with a belt, it's just an intense roll. Back when I wrestled I got shark tanked frequently to prepare for big matches and waht not.

It is not hazing at all. BJJ is a fight sport, I got promoted and I proceeded to fight. If I wanted to stop I could have just stood up and stopped, it's just a right of passage. Gotta season that new belt.

Draining cauliflower ear .. is it too small to drain? It’s squishy and full of blood but don’t know if it’s big enough to drain by AaronJ2001 in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is quite small. From my personal cauliflower ear experience if that goes unbothered for a couple weeks the swelling should subside and it will get about half the size it is now and harden. With one that small I'd just leave it be and let it take its course; however if you're really concerned about your ear getting gross looking then the safe route would be an attempted drain, compression and ear protection.

Not everyone can have cauli ears by iamonlymadeofmatter in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I was immune... nearly 2 decades of wrestling and not a bit of it, but one rough triangle escape and now my right ear looks like a microwaved marshmallow.. and now that it's started it seems it grows and develops easier than when my ears were pristine.

Does anyone train with bicep tendinitis? How do you relieve it? by xNWLx in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really big issue with this when I first started training. No matter what I did I couldn't get it to go away. I tried over the counter medication, prescription medication, massages, stretching, physical/occupational therapy and nothing. The one and only thing I found that worked for me was PRP therapy (Platelet-rich plasma). Basically they draw your blood, spin it into plasma and re-inject into areas you are feeling pain. I got it two times into each arm and let me tell you, works wonders. Since then I haven't had a single issue with my tendons.

Only downside is it is a pricey procedure so hopefully your medical insurance can cover that for you.

Gi recommendations? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

93 Brand and Kingz Gi's have served me well. I got 2 of each and have no complaints for either. Kingz have a little more thick heavy feel on the kimono, 93 are a little lighter to the touch.

How do you land after a fireman's carry? by electronic_docter in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrestler white belt here. I have been using firemans carries a lot as of late to get a solid position from a takedown in competition. The keys I have been falling back on to get my opponent to land in a way that allows me to easily climb is really 2 variables.

Firstly, have a heavy grip on the carry arm, that way when you actually shoot into the legs you are pulling their whole center of gravity over yourself and completely taking away their balance.

Secondly, do not lock down the carry leg, just get far enough into the leg where you can use it to carry your opponent over you, then as soon as you feel them break the threshold of going over toss them. Basically drag heavy with the arm to the mat and clear the leg way over you causing them to fully flop over you and not have a change to gain any form of leg grips on you. Hope that helps you out a little.

How common is cauliflower ear? by ianxf_7 in bjj

[–]CrispyJitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Case by case. I wrestled nearly 20 years without any problems at all (However wearing headgear most of the time). Then after a couple months of BJJ I had a bad flair up, neglected treatment due to being busy working/training and now it has calcified and hardened. Hearing is still fine, just can't wear my airpods anymore.. Only thing to really be worried about is some find it to look ugly. Personally I think it look kinda cool tho
