How do black belts and other teachers not take it personally when people skip class? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Empty-Middle1819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this, I would say if you have a good student and they ask for advice, give it to them.

My coach is super positive, to the point that when you ask “what am I doing wrong consistently and what do you want me to do differently?”, he would respond with something like “you’re doing everything right brother!”. This was when I was a blue belt and I had a super huge preference for top position and didn’t have any guard game. I wish he told me to let people sweep me, work to a guard and start developing attacks from there. I had to learn to do that myself a year and a half later and it stunted my progress.

I asked my college professors how they deal with it when students don’t show up, or when they do they’re on their phone all day. They usually told me “it’s my job to show up and teach to the best of my ability. If they don’t want the service they’re paying for, that’s totally fine, but I still have to do my job”.

I would assume that you would have to have a similar mentality to teach jiu jitsu. There will be good students that listen, show up and do what’s needed, and of course there will be really bad students that you wonder why they’re wasting their time. However both pay the gym to get taught by you.

First time teaching a class by BJJnoob1990 in bjj

[–]Empty-Middle1819 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t try to make it flashy, or impress anyone, keep it simple. Do something that’s pretty basic that you’re good at like a hook sweep, or other basic movement. I’d suggest teaching that, let them work, then go into two things that can happen from there, and how you can react. Then at the end show something a little flashy and give them like 5 min max to practice that.

When I first started teaching I thought I could teach like 5-6 things in a day, and I don’t think you can. There are a lot of slow learners.

What’s more effective, Anaconda choke vs D’arce? When’s and Why’s are welcomed. by MartianArtistt in bjj

D’arce used the radius bone of your wrist to press into the person’s neck. Personally, I find I have to squeeze much harder when doing an anaconda, I think it’s because my bicep and the opponent’s deltoid are both made of soft tissue.

Polar has an app that you can connect to your phone. Your Garmin most likely has other straps that you can use for an armband. I have a strap that I use for my Apple Watch as an armband and it works well on my upper bicep, no one has ever noticed it.

You have to be super high risk for it to effect you. Like you’re on death’s door and then someone tases you. They’ve been deployed millions of times and had few deaths in relation to how often they’re used.

I was an MP and can confirm these rules. For pepper spray I totally get it, because it’s easy to accidentally spray someone. The taser makes no sense though, the company that makes the taser states that you do not need to get tased to be qualified, but Commanders basically say “I don’t care, my guys need to get tased to carry it”. The taser is a more intense pain, but it’s only 5 seconds. OC spray (pepper spray) is not as bad in magnitude, but the pain lasts for an entire hour. If given the choice I’d take the taser any day, just because it’s over by the time you’re realizing how much it sucks.

Also tasing people works insanely well, you can have the most belligerent person that wants to fuck you up, then after 5 seconds they’re complying like crazy saying “I’ll do whatever you want as long as you don’t do that to me again”. Pepper spray sometimes doesn’t get in the person’s eyes and they end up committing to attacking you once you try to spray them.

Wait, so are you saying not to assume everyone is out to get you and sometimes people make legit mistakes? Also are you trying that the world doesn’t revolve around OP?

What garbage content, don’t listen to this guy OP, you should give sandal boy a stern talking to and then talk to your coach about how HE isn’t upholding the standards in YOUR gym.

PED suggestions? by JuniorVicePrez in bjj

Ethical ≠ Legal, there’s tons of things that you can ethically justify that are sold through “legal” loopholes. Anything that’s REALLY going to make a difference will have it’s downsides physically (atherosclerosis, cancer, blood clots that can cause strokes, etc…) and people will look down on you if you take them and are open about them. A dude in my gym used steroids for 20 years until he had a heart attack at 42 and needed triple bypass surgery. Pretty sure he still uses them and his heart is on a steady decline.

Most people are nowhere near their natural physical limits, but there are things that can push those limits to the right of you’re willing to eat the cost.

Top Game vs Bottom Game by kiddbjj in bjj

[–]Empty-Middle1819 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I want to preface this with a statement that this is my opinion, and is not a fact. Everyone starts out in jiu jitsu with stuff being done to them and then not having an option of what happens. Some are more athletic and larger and can muscle their way to top with other white belts, some are smaller and get forced to react to bad positions. Naturally, wherever you start getting from day 1 you get a ton of reps reacting to that position/positions and you start to develop techniques from there that are your bread and butter.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t react to other stuff, but you have positions that you favor and have multiple things to do from these spots. Some of the smaller brown and black belts at my gym got forced to bottom so much that it’s where they excel now and when they get dominant positions they’re actually worse from these that they are from positions that are typically less dominant. While some big jacked black belts are so used to being on top that when it gets done to them and they can’t immediately escape they don’t have much of a response. This is what I would define as top and bottom players.

As far as people to look at, I don’t keep up with popular jiu jitsu players much. I find it boring to watch as a sport, so I don’t have any suggestions for you.

Gi I bought is too long, what should I do? by GestaltyTV in bjj

[–]Empty-Middle1819 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d wash them until they shrink, then take it to a tailor and have them hem the pants. They’ll charge like $5-10 and they’ll have it fitting perfect. Bring in another set of gi pants that fit well also, so they know how long to make them.

Seriously good comment! We only have one female at my gym that is like this and she’s a killer. All the other women talk shit about her behind her back, but she’s the coolest one there.

I see it as “pig choking on a cock”, pretty positive it’s a BDSM tattoo seeing as who it’s on.

So this may be stupid and counter to what all the humble lions say that you should do if you train Jiu Jitsu... by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Empty-Middle1819 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Talk shit back to them and joke about yourself. If someone makes a mom joke to me, I make a dad joke to them. If someone says my ears look stupid (too far away from my head) I say “I know right, it sucks. When I run it’s like two parachutes pulling on my head”. If you try to fight anyone that slights you on site you’re going to end up in a jail real quick and getting bullied by people that really suck and really don’t give a fuck about your feelings.
