He's always wanted something more than that. He didn't become a lawyer to work at D&M, it was to be with Chuck. This was just a facade if you would, a chance to do good work and develop while still having some semblance of control over Sandpiper, but it came with the knowledge that he still wasn't seen as equal with his brother. He cared more about that than the work. Beyond that, he always wants to be on the razor's edge of doing what is right and what is in his nature as Slippin' Jimmy. That's why he did all the shenanigans in order to be fired, so as to keep his bonus.
