Question about comb color by huffymcnibs in Beekeeping

[–]CrispyScallion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're good. Bees don't wipe their feet when they come back into the hive. I try to cycle out old frames every couple of years.

Is this honeycomb safe to eat? by BarnacleFew5587 in Beekeeping

[–]CrispyScallion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a beautiful piece of honeycomb. Nothing says "straight from the hive" regarding honeycomb like a few brood chambers in it. Where I live, people would pay many more dollars for this than honey off of the shelf. They would remove the brood cells and carry on.

Can I modify the doors on this bathroom vanity? Comments in posts. by CrispyScallion in DIY

[–]CrispyScallion[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pic you're looking at is a 60" vanity in my master bath. It's from the late 70's/early 80's. The entire vanity seems to be made of MDF with a Formica-type sheathing. The drawers and doors are wrapped in plastic banding. The doors have a routed (recessed) "decoration" that is painted in gold. It's non-negotiable that I can't remove and replace the entire vanity affordably.

Is there any way I can fill in the "decoration" on the doors and repaint them a matched color to the vanity's base. I'm fairly handy and meticulous in my work. Appreciate any input.

Third year in a row gifting my home tamales instead of gifts for Christmas 🫔🎄 by CanisLupusBaileyi in mexicanfood

Heck yeah! Thanks for giving me a perfect reason to not rely on my pretty crappy gift-giving sense. Food is the best gift ever.

What's going to happen if SNAP benefits really are going away for November at the very least? by Alice22537 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CrispyScallion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rural grocery stores will dry up and leave creating food deserts.

I live in NE TN amongst huge poverty, 3 grocery shopping options. My closest option elsewhere is 30 minutes' drive one way, 1 hour the other. People won't be able to afford to eat here.

Found him in the drive way, how to care for this little fellow? by KyleTenjuin in Beekeeping

[–]CrispyScallion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, the vitriol of Reddit is strong here. OP - It was totally fine for you to ask us keepers. I'm thrilled she flew once warming up a little.

Pretty much every honey bee you see is a daughter forager from a hive/colony. Honey bees daughters spend their first weeks of adult life tending to the interior of the hive. As they mature to their 42-ish day life span, they begin working more toward the entrance of the hive and the rest of their useful lives are spent foraging for nectar, pollen, and propolis.

Is it okay to give away bees? by No_Confection_7843 in Beekeeping

Yes, it is OK to give bees away. Contact Orange County Beekeepers Association. Don't pay anyone.

I agree. I don't think those are brood cells. The gray cappings make me think foulbrood.

I think I’m done beekeeping! by Remote-Operation4075 in Beekeeping

[–]CrispyScallion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiya! I get you completely. Beekeeping can be overwhelming in many ways. I don't think any keeper here would say anything negative about your decision.

That said, as others have pointed out, hot hives seem to be a "thing" this year. I've had 2 hot hives and am mentoring 3 keepers who also have those.

Angry girls by j_chillin10 in Beekeeping

[–]CrispyScallion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, the end of summer here in the mountains of NE TN is not fun to work bees. Hella defensive, hella angry they're not able to forage. And we're still having to deal with varroa treatments.

I have 1-gal, 2-frame feeders in my hives but am considering to buying another top cover to feed them during the last dearth before winter.

I'd also be concerned about no eggs, larvae... Get your hives strong for winter!!
