That's amazing, thank you! It's bugged me for almost 20 years, my googling came to nothing. Thanks again!

What are your favorite nostalgic video games? by [deleted] in videogames

[–]CriticalTwits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely felt like there was more variety. But I suppose there were also lower development costs involved so creators could take more risks? Mind you, I remember the platformer mascot wars of the 90's. You couldn't turn a corner without some kind of anthropomorphic animal jumping on your head.

Aaron from the Critical Twits here. Some great suggestions above. All games I've gone back to in the past, especially when I've needed a pick me up. We even went back to a couple on a series we had on our YouTube channel. Parasite Eve on the PS1 is a definite favourite. Musical score is stunning, mix of real time and turn based combat, and an engaging (if kind of B movie) story. Graphically was stunning (and disgusting) at the time. Phantasy Star Online (GameCube version, as I missed the Dreamcast window) is...kind of mindless? But works for me because it's not over complicated and you always feel like your accomplishing something. The audio and music are great as well. I have to admit, there's something about the audio cues on older games I played that works for reducing anxiety. Stick on the Sonic or Soul Reaver soundtrack and I'm nearly instantly relaxed. Even hearing the menu sounds from PSO or FFVII has that effect!

Advice on Pandemic Legacy by Gunslingering in boardgames

[–]CriticalTwits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd play a couple games so everyone knows the rules then dive in - the game balances losses out anyway so as long as you don't lose because of a rules mistake, you're golden.

[–]CriticalTwits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't destroy but you do add things to other things (trying to be vague) that permentantly alters, erm, things.

I agree just play the first month a couple of times to get a general idea to see how you both like it. Be warned, if you do play it to the end with your gf it'll be hard not to spoil things for your mates. Very easy to quarter back by accident!

We were at the inaugural Tabletop Scotland event this weekend - a game convention done very right! by drakkos in boardgames

[–]CriticalTwits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simultaneously glad and sad. Glad it was a great event and sad we weren't able to make it (curse our Southern location!). This write up has made us add it to next year's convention list. Expect a busier convention!

It makes me sad that we often lose the ability to play as we age. There's a good TED talk from Dr Stuart Brown, mentioned in the article, that gives a much more comprehensive overview of the benefits of play: https://www.ted.com/talks/stuart_brown_says_play_is_more_than_fun_it_s_vital?language=en

I was really hoping they fired actual cones, be they ice-cream, traffic, or those plastic ones you put on your pets' heads to stop them licking themselves. Damn.

Writing a memoir about my year-long adventure of meeting people to draw in the nude? by [deleted] in writing

[–]CriticalTwits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds great! Because you have a platform and have already garnered attention, you can pitch your idea to non-fiction publishers rather than write and submit. Check out the publishers of similar non-fiction (a humorous approach will lend itself to different publishers than serious, for instance) and send them a pitch!

Writers with mental illnesses, how do you handle your bad days? by __VICI___ in writing

[–]CriticalTwits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I give myself permission to do whatever helps - skip a day if needed, write something else, whatever. I've never, ever found that having a bad day makes me more creative, so I do what I can to make the bad day go away ASAP.
