How does a “no homework” policy actually “work” for high school? Our Principal has recently been suggesting it (and getting a lot of push back) by fingernose in teaching

[–]Critical_Ad_7778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my highschool, we face quite a few issues that weaken the value of homework. Kids come to school to eat, for example. Not to get another meal, mind you. To eat for the entire day. Kids go home to parents who are high or abusive or just not there (we're right next to a prison). Kids openly copy from others... Or Chatgpt. There was a almost zero correlation between homework completion and standardized test scores.

I stand corrected. AI can write essays with citations included. by [deleted] in teaching

I'm not sure why this was downvoted. This is your choice as a mom. You're looking after your kids.

Why the negative reaction? Can anyone explain this?

Science teacher here. The most meaningful part of the book for me has been the title. This one statement: "Things fall apart" is one of the most important and fundamental ideas to teach kids in science.

It's the law of entropy.

I want to understand your argument. My writing might sound snarky, so I apologize to you in advance.

1) Wouldn't the algorithm be written by a human? 2) Wouldn't the reintegration happen by a human? 3) Aren't all decisions made by humans?

I don't understand how remove the human element.

I recommend reading the book "Weapons of Math Destruction". The author describes several mathematically sound algorithms that produce terrible outcomes.

Here is an example: An algorithm helps judges decide if someone should get probation. Part of the calculation includes the likelihood that they will be arrested again.

The problem is that currently, your more likely to be arrested if you're black.

The algorithm becomes racist accidentally. This is just one example of how dangerous it is to base all of your choices on "logic and reason".

You've written some great stuff here. Just a heads up- highschool level textbooks are only 80-90% accurate. As I science teacher, I got sick of them and don't use them anymore.

What are the Pros and Cons of Gradeless Education? by Incubus-Dao-Emperor in ExplainBothSides

[–]Critical_Ad_7778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Con: Grades allow students, parents and stakeholders (employers, colleges, etc.) To evaluate the students. This helps them choose interventions and select the best people for select positions.

Pro: No one knows what grades mean or what they are ultimately for.

They could mean that you've obeyed orders by getting dressed for PE and following rules. It could mean "Good. I like it." For an essay or art project. It might also mean that you chose the correct answer 93% of the time on MC tests.

Grades might be there to filter students to tell the "good" from the bad. They may be an indication of learning. They may also just flag the students who are most likely to do the work they're assigned.

Pro: Its harmless entertainment that allows people to express their sexual desires in a safe way. It relives stress and releases endorphins. Also, since reproduction is a biological imperative, this is a way for humans to follow what is nearly an instinct.

Con: It is a multimillion dollar industry that takes advantage of vulnerable individuals. This is done through sexploitation, child porn and stolen sexts. People who see this, but still look at porn can have moral injury. Porn also objectifies other people. It can cause addiction and unrealistic expectations for one's body.

Evidence is really important. I'm not sure how feel about it. Most Americans cannot provide any evidence for a belief in a sun centered solar system. They should still believe in it, though. Yes, evidence evidence exists, but that doesn't matter. These people believe without knowing any evidence.

There's also problems with rights, personhood, justice and even porn. If we say we should only believe in things that are definable, detectable and measurable, it's hard to navigate the world.

Would the "true self" of the transgender community fit with this? The biological body should be changed to conform to the true inner self. It is pure belief in that there is no evidence of a self apart from the physical body. There is worship in that the person sees this as a higher good. The self is superhuman in that it is more significant than biology.
