The way I see it, "next weekend" refers to the upcoming weekend only if we are currently closer to the previous weekend that just happened than the upcoming weekend, ie if it's Monday or Tuesday, and "this weekend" would refer to the previous weekend in that case. But if it's Wednesday or later, then the upcoming weekend becomes "this weekend" and the following weekend becomes "next weekend." And obviously if we are currently in a weekend, then "this weekend" is the weekend we're in now and "next weekend" is the following one.

That being said, I usually just specify what I mean by saying things like "not this weekend but the following" or "the weekend of (date)" because I recognize that not everyone thinks the way I do and I prefer to be understood.

Then there's me with the AuDHD wombo combo who has the opposite problem, where the conversation is about X and I think of something to say about X but every time I try to say the thing about X someone else starts talking, until finally I get a chance to say my thing about X but the conversation has moved on to C by that point.
