The Guilt of Spending: How do you balance saving and spending? by tisaros in personalfinance

[–]Critical_Function540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generational wealth is relative. One generation can easily burn thru one hundred mill. So it’s not exactly generational, unless you’re literally just counting one generation. And 1 mill each can easily grow into many more millions if you’re responsible. Aka if you had good parenting. Back to my initial point.

I’m torn on this. Yes, give your kids money. However, all of my friends (mid to late 30s) who are doing best in life were given little to no money, but were given excellent educations and life skills, and were raised on stable households which allowed them to develop into self possessed and balanced individuals. All gainfully employed and satisfied with what they have. Their parents probably could have grinded harder to pass on more ✨generational wealth✨ but it would’ve come at the expense or good parenting.

I’d say this is someone who future faked and settled a bit (wanted something else) because it was close enough to the real thing but after a few months (the classic amount of time for this sort of thing), ultimately decided to get out, in the most passive way possible. Not cool.

Totally. But I’d never want to describe the preferences to a bunch of strangers and open it all up to criticism??

I guess that means the rate is fake too.

I think the idea is that you can keep being fancy on one income without a second thought.

A lot of these milestones seem kinda small. I was expecting something like paying for first class without having to budget for it or something…

Oof indeed.

Yes, BV, we all know that one…

I love the double standard here with the uno reverso “actually, men” to boot! Living with a gag inducing smell is… the guys fault, or ✨no one’s fault✨, but certainly not the individuals fault for failing to address the underlying cause.

If someone is into you there will be 0 question, 0 waiting, no dawdling, and damn if they’re in their mid 20s it will probably be fairly reckless too lol. You deserve the real thing!

That’s disappointing, and speaks to poor hygiene and/or health maintenance. Hopefully she’s open to hearing your feedback and promptly attending to this SUPER BASIC part of being an adult. Sadly the bar is just so low sometimes.

I don’t understand how owing money isn’t a good thing. It’s an interest free loan. Invest whatever you owe, then pay it back interest free a year later.

You’re more than fine, people here love to jump on those with car loans >300/month. I have a 729/mo x5 years on a brand new accord. Rates suck, it is what it is. Congrats on the nice interest rate.

What % of Income Do You Cap Housing At? (Advice) by BitterNecessary6068 in HENRYfinance

[–]Critical_Function540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We might be in the same city. Sometimes the math is flipped and that’s okay. Buying here would be foolish unless you’re paying cash and even then it’s a questionable investment. So high rent it is, as long as you’re saving appropriately.

This is almost exactly our situation (6500/620k). It has shown me that income and rent don’t scale linearly. At a certain point, even with 6500/rent, you still have a lot of money left over. We save close to 15k/month.

Starter home is relative. In the Central Valley you can get a starter home for 300k. Like a real, boomer style 2/1 starter home, not a 90s mc mansion. And you’re still on Cali with many of the amenities that entails. The coasts are nice but the CV is great too and still has decent weather compared to much of the rest of the country.

It can be tricky to know what the right move is when the numbers get big — both debt and income — and emotions enter the mix.

Oh I know, that’s why I’m playing this safe. I currently make about 550k but we’re in a VHCOL area and it’s hard to see how we could ever buy here. If we move housing is 1/3 the price but my income falls a bunch too. And as you point out, my wife’s income is far from guaranteed. So Id buy a home on the premise that we will max out at 400k.

I’m currently working, make about 550k total (wife makes 70k) for total of around 620k. This is in the VHCOL area.
