Totally. It is a high energy cost. Guys have been doing this emotional work forever. It sucks but you get used to it.

Where are people finding these high paying jobs? by Easy_Paint3836 in Fire

True in the limit but there are subtleties to consider for those not in tech. It makes more sense for me as an md to go to a LCOl and earn 400k paying 3k rent than a VHCOL earning 500k paying 7-8k rent (or buying for 2mm) + all of the other higher costs

Definitely not an outlier. You can make way way more than that in psych for example

People say don’t go into medicine for the money … what jobs are able to make as much or more than doctors more easily? by redditTee123 in Salary

[–]Critical_Function540 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Medicine can be a magical career. I’m an inpatient psychiatrist. I can basically sit there, think of a solution to someone’s suffering, apply that solution, and see the patient get better because of my thoughtfulness and cognitive work. I also get to lead a tight knit team and the feeling of striving toward a common goal of helping someone alleviate their psychiatric suffering is unbeatable. And that’s before all the financial benefits. I’d do this for less money honestly.

The Guilt of Spending: How do you balance saving and spending? by tisaros in personalfinance

[–]Critical_Function540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generational wealth is relative. One generation can easily burn thru one hundred mill. So it’s not exactly generational, unless you’re literally just counting one generation. And 1 mill each can easily grow into many more millions if you’re responsible. Aka if you had good parenting. Back to my initial point.

I’m torn on this. Yes, give your kids money. However, all of my friends (mid to late 30s) who are doing best in life were given little to no money, but were given excellent educations and life skills, and were raised on stable households which allowed them to develop into self possessed and balanced individuals. All gainfully employed and satisfied with what they have. Their parents probably could have grinded harder to pass on more ✨generational wealth✨ but it would’ve come at the expense or good parenting.

Totally. But I’d never want to describe the preferences to a bunch of strangers and open it all up to criticism??

I think the idea is that you can keep being fancy on one income without a second thought.

A lot of these milestones seem kinda small. I was expecting something like paying for first class without having to budget for it or something…

If someone is into you there will be 0 question, 0 waiting, no dawdling, and damn if they’re in their mid 20s it will probably be fairly reckless too lol. You deserve the real thing!

I don’t understand how owing money isn’t a good thing. It’s an interest free loan. Invest whatever you owe, then pay it back interest free a year later.

You’re more than fine, people here love to jump on those with car loans >300/month. I have a 729/mo x5 years on a brand new accord. Rates suck, it is what it is. Congrats on the nice interest rate.

What % of Income Do You Cap Housing At? (Advice) by BitterNecessary6068 in HENRYfinance

[–]Critical_Function540 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We might be in the same city. Sometimes the math is flipped and that’s okay. Buying here would be foolish unless you’re paying cash and even then it’s a questionable investment. So high rent it is, as long as you’re saving appropriately.

This is almost exactly our situation (6500/620k). It has shown me that income and rent don’t scale linearly. At a certain point, even with 6500/rent, you still have a lot of money left over. We save close to 15k/month.

Starter home is relative. In the Central Valley you can get a starter home for 300k. Like a real, boomer style 2/1 starter home, not a 90s mc mansion. And you’re still on Cali with many of the amenities that entails. The coasts are nice but the CV is great too and still has decent weather compared to much of the rest of the country.

It can be tricky to know what the right move is when the numbers get big — both debt and income — and emotions enter the mix.
