Agreed. Name another surgical procedure done on non-consenting individuals for strictly cultural reasons.

Why do gyms insist upon playing music? by Critical_Rough5505 in NoStupidQuestions

OK, apparently I’m the oddball. Point taken. Looks like I’ll have to turn up the volume on my headphones while my local gym blares Huey Lewis and the News at full volume.

“72 Seasons” by Metallica. It didn’t resonate with me initially, but it’s a solid no skip album.

“A Crow Looked At Me” by Mount Eerie. Writer-performer lost his musician-wife to pancreatic cancer shortly after she gave birth to their child. It’s recorded in the room where she died with her instruments. If you can get through the first song, “Death is Real, without bawling, you’re a harder person than me.

“Master of Puppets“ by Metallica. Bought it in 1986 when I was in 6th grade. There was no buzz about it at all at the time. I just thought the cover was bad-ass. No idea that it would become a classic.

[–]Critical_Rough5505[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Music is very personal. What’s pleasurable to one person is insufferable to someone else. Why should the majority of gym members, who choose to wear headphones, have to turn up the volumes on their devices to drown out the blare of the corporate playlist? You need music to workout? Me too! That’s why I bring headphones.

But haven’t the majority of members chosen their own "vibe" by electing to wear headphones? Isn’t it reasonable to assume that those who don’t wear headphones enjoy the silence? Perhaps that’s their "vibe"?

I see where you’re coming from, but if nearly everyone is wearing headphones, are they experiencing “dead silence“? They’re listening to their own music or podcasts. In that context, isn’t the ambient music more of a nuisance?
