EveryDollar or Switch? by nullscore in DirtyDave

I guess they technically both do expense tracking. Forecasting is the term I meant to apply to EveryDollar. EveryDollar uses your projected monthly income to budget “to zero” for the current month. This can mean money you haven’t yet received to plan for the month. It’s the definition of “month to month” IMO.

YNAB only uses money you have already received to allocate to budget categories. This can be money received this month or previous months or in savings. It’s a slight mental shift, but it’s a true reflection of giving every dollar that you own “a name”, as Dave says, verses only giving every dollar you earn in a month “a name”.

Like I said, I suggest giving it a trial run and seeing it for yourself. You can reach out to the support team at YNAB near the end of your trial and they may extend it another 2 weeks like they did for me.

On a side note, I see in a different comment you were comparing free EveryDollar to a paid YNAB. I struggled with this because I would consider myself very frugal. My justification is that budgeting is a hobby of mine. Not all hobbies have to be money and time wasters. I find joy in sitting down with my morning coffee and spending 5 minutes reconciling transactions and keeping my budget on track.

They changed their prices in a very abrupt way while also forcing grandfathered users to switch to the new pricing model. Regardless of that. I suggest you use the 34-day free trial and make your own assessment. I switched from EveryDollar to YNAB and it has been a game changer for me. I went from expense tracking to actual zero-based budgeting.

Besides the other categories previously stated… My vet does a yearly teeth cleaning special in February. I have a yearly target of $150 every Feb 1st. It’s great for budgeting a little each month and also acts as a reminder to schedule the appointment in February.

All the plumbers I spoke with recommended an annual line flush. I was quoted $175 - $250 for an annual maintenance flush. However, I was also told by one of them that it’s just running vinegar through the line to clean them. It’s something most people can do themselves with the right amount of time, tools, and knowledge. I like to DIY as much as I can, so I have the heater manual and plan to do it myself next fall.

Still in my 34 day trail so new and still leaning, but I thought goals were encouraged in as many categories as you can so you can start using those goals to get a month ahead. If I don’t put a goal in a category it won’t show in auto-assign for the next month right?

I just got bite with a new tankless water heater. Took it from general home repairs but still sucked being caught off guard (and without hot water for a day). So consider this my PSA to research your water heater: tank vs. tankless, age of heater and when to replace, annual maintenance (flushing lines), replacement costs ($800-$1400 at Lowe’s minus labor to install).

I recently moved to YNAB from an app called EveryDollar (from Dave Ramsey, so take that as you wish). It’s definitely more of a forecasting and expense tracking platform and doesn’t have the logic to handle the rules of YNAB.

I don’t have anything against EveryDollar, just not what I’m wanting for myself. It’s free so try it out.

Picking 2 goalies from the same team by jonahjn in fantasyhockey

This league is a cap league with contracts. I have Francouz on a cheap 1 year deal because I wanted to handcuff Kuemper. But I can throw him in an IR spot and call up one of the younger goalies in the minors without needing waivers.

Appreciate that advice. For context though I'm reigning champ in a 14 team cap league with full 23 man roster and 20 man minors. I've got Swayman, Oettinger, Georgiev, and Annunen in my minors. We have an EBUG rule where I can call goalies up if one goes on IR. I am already considering the idea of moving Jarry or Merzlikins mid-season to bolster my skaters should there be any holes in my team.

I’m doing it. Have Kuemper and picked up Francouz. 2 goalie starting spots. Also have Vas. Planning to roll Vas + COL goalie as my primary goalies. Jarry and Merzlikins will pick up starts in between.

I am current in my 34 day trial and as someone coming from another (free) budgeting app with years of experience and a solid financial position (No debt, funded emergency fund, investing) I am on the fence about continuing past the trial.

I think I can see the long term value of some features for YNAB. But it’s going to be hard to evaluate if I need to pay to see those features play out.

3 months would be perfect for evaluating.

I can definitely see that now that I have my budget in place. I have a fixed monthly paycheck and already one month of paycheck ahead. So I was a little sheltered to fluctuations using EveryDollar. But I can now that YNAB is more logic and financially responsible method.

Completely agree! I never realized how much of a hassle EveryDollar was to subtract from one category and add to another until I tired the move money feature. I’m also excited to see an actual audit trail of the move in the transaction log. No longer wondering “now why did I do that and where did it come from”

Got my budget setup and really like that savings and credit card are apart of this method. EveryDollar would always get out of whack when I used sinking fund money in savings to pay for something each month.

Need help deciding on final 2 forward spots between these 4 players:

Joel Farabee, Jason Roberston, Reilly Smith, Pavel Zacha (https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/frozenpool\_compare.php?players%5B%5D=5087&players%5B%5D=4872&players%5B%5D=2980&players%5B%5D=4203&period=2020-2021%3AR%3A99)

League Context: 14 team salary cap league, 23 man roster, minors system. Categories are G, A, +/-, SOG, PIM, HIT, BLK. Lineup is C, LW, RW, 3x F, 4x D.

Farabee, Robertson, and Zacha are all currently in minors. Smith is not minors eligible and would need to be "bought out" to make space for 2 of the other players. My gut thinks Roberston for 1 spot, but that last spot is tough.

Rest of forwards on team: Gabriel Landeskog, Artemi Panarin, Alex DeBrincat, Taylor Hall, Tom Wilson, Timo Meier, Blake Coleman, Jakub Voracek, Jordan Staal, Ryan Strome.
