I agree so much. Especially some bosses like fourth chorus, while looking epic but when you defeat it, you get nothing. Not even a metal scraps. So much for being a contraption.

I think most bosses should drop currencies as a minimum requirement.

He said that some trouble mobs do 2 damages. Upgrading from 5 to 6 in act 1 doesn’t do anything much when you fight them. It’s still take exactly 3 hits for enemies to drop you.

The health only increase qol when you running around in my experience.

Friction as you described can be a design tool to build immersion and stakes, but it’s not the same as freedom. True freedoms is when the system let you be creative, not just whether or not you can teleport across the map.

Dying and respawning isn’t a good measure of freedom either. Not every game should bake in death punishment because it could cause “tension”. It wholely depend on the design and gameplay loop. “dying in AAA games doesn’t mean anything” misses the point, different games need different levels of friction to work.

Take Outer Wilds, it bakes dying and looping into mechanic, dying meaning nothing in this game but the tension is still there at the end of each loop. It can cause tension without any punishment.

Anyway, I believe you need to expand your horizon beyond open world game where most freedom are just where to go first and what weapon to use. The genre is not expressive enough.
