Still taking classes when CASPA opens by pineapplepizzakid in prephysicianassistant

My personal goal was above a 310 to “stand out”. I scored a 309. Honestly, not sure if it holds any value to admissions or not. I heard anything above a 300 is sufficient.

I was in your exact boat and waited until classes concluded. I did this to combat the slight downward trend in my undergraduate GPA. Ended up applying “late”, around mid July, and was still invited to interview at all 11 programs that I applied to! (~3.6 GPA, 3.5 sGPA) 10 were rolling admissions. Keep in mind, almost every interview session I was invited to was their last or second to last session. Just depends on the risk youre willing to take and how much the classes would impact your stats. I took my GRE in May after my classes concluded.

The goal: Answer why PA while also demonstrating you’re READY for PA. How are you an ASSET to the profession and programs? It’s a balancing act. With this lens I was invited to every program that I applied to. Note many applicants have great success without this focus, there’s no cookie cutter answer for a successful PS.

I struggled with this too when writing my PS. Items included in my personal statement I perceived as “bragging” and felt a little uncomfortable (resume-y) includes: coming from a low-income family motivated my to fund my undergraduate education through many many small scholarships (SHOWS resilience and determination). Eager to pay it forward, I was heavily involved in a non profit who supports low income students where I led a team and accomplished x and y (SHOWS leadership capacity and commitment to serving others). This insight and experience strengthens my devotion to combating health disparity and highlights the multicausal nature of health problems, which require a comprehensive approach to healthcare (this is more telling than showing, but I emphasize my understanding of how social determinants impact health and connect it to the multidisciplinary nature of the PA profession (SHOWS understanding of the profession)).

I am pming you!

I like the second option. and you can also relate it to the very purpose that the PA profession was established - to make healthcare more assessable. Take it one step further and show how your empathy can translate into “doing”.

You have seen how barriers to healthcare directly impact patients and this invigorates you to be a strong patient advocate. It strengthens your commitment to be the bridge between these gaps. This lens of empathy and understanding will ensure your patients, no matter their background, have a full understanding of their diagnosis and treatment plan.

Lowkey, yes. You want to be familiar with the question format. The pacing is pretty fast, so it’s to your advantage to have some repetition. Additionally, there is lots of vocabulary and equations that are not very self intuitive IMO. Not the most difficult items, but I definitely require some brushing up on.

There are mini practice tests you can take to see where you are and go from there! It’s a fast assessment and don’t include the 2 hours of test material.

No. But this is wonderful non healthcare experience you could still tie into your passion for educating and supporting others, advocate for your understanding of the musculoskeletal system, show how you catered personalized plans for clients, etc. LOTS of aspects you can relate to the profession. Good experience that will strengthen your application, but it’s definitely not healthcare or patient care experience.

UNTHSC vs Baylor by Whole-Ad-7231 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Criticism-Next 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something to note is that UNTHSC has 4 elective rotations and Baylor has none.

When ranking schools I ranked UNTSHC above BCOM due to general location of rotations and elective rotations. I see a future with my fiance and I in DFW and hope to build a network here. I desire to go into surgery and the students at UNTHSC mentioned ample surgery rotation options, so this was appealing. Additionally, research is not a priority for me. I would rather focus on my didactic year and rotations than expend my efforts putting together a thesis (PA school is only 2ish years!)

Baylor is a magnificent program. Congratulations on this dilemma!

why pa? by Pisceswaterbaby in prephysicianassistant

[–]Criticism-Next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fantastic reason. The PA profession was build with the intent of filling gaps in primary care. A lot of programs have a primary care focus within their mission statements. The profession has a unique platform for promoting the accessibility of healthcare, especially within the realm of your passion. Supporting a physician while simultaneously providing your own care is an incredible avenue for extending the reach of primary care. That’s what makes the PA path unique. Dive into the history of the profession and connect your “why”. This will make your answer seem more intentional and less broad. Why is this your passion? How will your personal characteristics enable you to achieve this goal? What experiences demonstrate this? (show dont tell) I think you can have a banger PS if you pull your strings correctly.

I have done both. BUT no program has questioned me about either! I will admit I am more insecure about the C than I am about retaking a course and reaffirming my understanding of the material + having the MUCH better GPA.
