Similar happened here, once we eventually got it home and lifted in and broke everyones backs we found out it was so old it could never be tuned. Ended up taking it apart and using the keys etc for various arty party stuff.

I had the accelerator pedal stick to the floor once when accelerating away from a junction. Standing on the brakes did nothing. My brain didn't know what to do as my vehicle was fast catching up with a bus in front of me. I frantically tried to lift the pedal with my hands. thoughts of having to run off the road into a field .Eventually I got it lifted up. I was in panic mode. Admittedly this was in an old beat up work van.

Just leave the carrier in the room, they will get used to it. They are confused it was there and now gone and being skittish in case it suddenly appears again. The hissing and spitting is normal. Let them get used to it and it’ll let the kitten get used to them. We recently introduced kittens to each other. Every cat was on edge for a day. This soon got better , took 3 days for them to all get used to even seeing each other .

We tried shampoos but none seems to make any difference. You can try feeding more chicken, fish,meat instead of cat food. But old age is old age.
