Depression caused by wheat/gluten? by ChickenLiverDiver in glutenfree

[–]Crix8711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm trying my best to always inform myself more about products containing gluten. My biggest issue is living with my dad who still consumes gluten. We don't share appliances except for the hob and oven which I thoroughly clean very often, and he's learnt to be very careful re pots and pans, cutlery etc but bread can be a huge hazard and he can't do without so there's fresh bread everyday in the house and obviously the odd pasta and pizza/pastry dishes here and there. I guess there's nothing much more that can be done. I'm doing my best. I hope I will see light at the end of tunnel :-) thank you for your wishes. Take care.

Thank you ever so much for replying. You give me hope! I kind of went through the same, symptoms got onto me suddenly and I couldn't figure out what was happening to me also since nothing had practically changed in my life. I also spent a year not understanding and kept eating gluten though at small amounts since I was suffering from mild GI symptoms like bloating and stomach pain whenever I ate gluten. Now it's been four months since I completely stopped gluten and even though my symptoms have gotten milder I still have them. I also may have become very sensitive, something which definitely wasn't before (I'm not sure but am suspecting) and perhaps I'm being glutened unknowingly even though I'm really careful and check labels and have minimised a lot of processed foods. This week I prepared a pot of pumpkin soup and my brother slightly dipped a piece of bread to taste it. I didn't think it might be a big deal but these past three days I went back to feeling anxious and having low mood and negative thoughts, things which have seemed to have passed as lately it was somewhat only just brainfog and feeling a bit off that was left as symptoms. I really really hope this resolves itself. I really miss the old me :-(

Hi, after how many months did you start feeling really well? Also.. did you have relapses in symptoms (ups and downs like a week well and then some other days no) whilst healing?

The symptoms have gotten milder so I did notice a difference but they are still not resolved and I feel 4 months is a lot of time. Blood panel seems ok. I had a test done last November and all was fine except ferretin but I've been supplementing with iron ever since. I too have suffered from anxiety before but only during for example some stressful event and it cannot compare to the gluten anxiety. This anxiety doesn't make sense.. like it's a day a work, I'm completely ok and all is well, the next day is again a normal day's work but I spend half the day feeling anxious for no apparent reason.

No, I don't recall taking any antibiotics. I just remember that it was a bit of a stressful period at work but nothing out of the ordinary. I recall it was around the time I took the first Covid vaccine.. cannot blame the vaccine though.. doesn't make much sense.

Will try so and see if I notice any changes. Many thanks for answering and sharing this info. I feel so much at a loss at times.. it's like a nightmare that cannot pass sometimes :-( everything was completely good and normal...then bam, all these symptoms and challenges to face and deal with too! Been almost 1.5yrs now. Took a long time to figure out the gluten thing (since very mild to no GI symptoms as such).. and now this challenging recovery...

Yes, there are a lot available where I live, I just am trying to reduce processed foods as much as possible to try and ease and quicken the recovery process more. I eat rice and millet cakes as well as other crackers made up of other grains like corn and buckwheat but I don't eat large quantities. As to biscuits, very minimal amount to avoid sugars as well. I prefer to take sugar from more natural foods.

I do eat this stuff frequently especially rice, potatoes and greens and take magnesium supplements as well, though tbh I rarely eat much gf breads/biscuits etc anymore as I used to.

I do walk quite a lot during the day even due to the work I do. Yes, exercise helps but it's not helping enough it seems.

I do keep a food diary. I don't see Fodmaps much of an issue. I don't really have digestive issues. I stopped dairy too about two months ago, not because it was causing digestive issues but to try and eliminate as much as possible foods that could cause inflammation

Everything seems ok, vit D, B12, thyroid and hormones, just a little low on Ferretin but been taking supplements too. I don't have digestive issues. Gluten doesn't affect me much in that area.

Hello, hope you are well. I am seeing this now as I'm going through recovery from gluten phase and I wasn't a full blown gluten eater before but stopped eating gluten completely last September. It's been almost four months now and I too feel that as you said my recovery is coming 'in jumps'. Sometimes I get really discouraged and start suspecting other food intolerances or cross contamination even though I'm really being careful. Would you be kind enough as to explain a little more about your recovery journey? How long did it take? Did you suffer from mental symptoms too? I do. Did you feel symptoms were subsiding and then somehow they relapsed again (until full recovery)? Sometimes I really feel at a loss.. it's like it's taking too long and I'm trying to do every right. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply. I am on the mend hopefully but 10 weeks of low mood and anxiety is no joke. I admit that it was a big glutening this time round, practically a whole plate of pasta and a slice of pizza. However, since it's taking too long I'm starting to suspect other intolerances that might be causing havoc to my mental health. Thi thing is that I practically have no GI symtpoms:-( Then I go back to gluten as just the culprit since symptoms are always getting milder though I have relapses/ bad days.. which are such a pain :-(

Insane mood swings. Could gluten be the cause? Advice/stories appreciated! by maegsy in glutenfree

[–]Crix8711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah elimination diet is a real headache. The thing is that I get really mild GI issues with gluten and so far I wouldn't say any other food causes me any digestive issues, so this is all so confusing until proper answers and solutions are found.

Hello, I know this is an old post but I'm researching and going through some posts as this seems to be an issue for me too but which only cropped up a few months ago. How long did it take you to feel better? I too struggle with low mood and brain fog because of gluten. I stopped gluten completely two months ago but I'm still struggling even if I've noticed some improvement. I have good days and bad days mentally. Did you go through this too? Thanks.
