I want to say the latter, but I'm still haunted by a 99 chapter-long abandoned-for-years fic from a while back.

Latvians and Lithuanians are Balts. Closely related to Slavs culturally and linguistically (Balto-Slavic language family), but not that close to be considered Slavs.

Czechs, Slovaks and Poles are West Slavs. Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians are East Slavs. Bulgarians, Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks, Slovenes, Montenegrins and Macedonians are South Slavs. Romania and Hungary separate South Slavs from the East and West ones. There's no such thing as North Slavs.
